Title: What do you buy to take home...?
Post by: kalkan4eva on February 28, 2014, 02:00:08 PM
Most people know I am fond of my bags and always buy at least one to take home but we also stock up on green tea, spices and pharmaceuticals when we are in Kalkan.  Some of the things you can buy over the counter from my best friend the pharmacist are pretty fabulous - especially pain relief gels, fat feet pills and broad spectrum antibiotics.
What things do you buy in Kalkan to specifically take home which aren't really souvenirs..?

I am attracted to evil eye key rings..the sparklier and danglier the better,Always buy a dozen ..they are light and you can give them out to those you have forgot and pretend you bought it for them specifically :P ;)...also Desti gift shop sells inexpensive glasses cases ..always treat myself to a set for sun glasses and ordinary glasses also good idea for a present as they are light.i am also a sucker for evil eye buying!! ;D
ooooooooo!! I do love a trinket!!

Lol BL you and me both wirh the evil eyes. Have at least one in every room, including some the size of dinner plates. Jewellery of course, bags absolutely. Spices including Turks cinnamon which I'm convinced is better than the stuff we buy at home. Pomegranate syrup and a selection of Turkish biscuits and chocolate. No wonder we struggle with baggage allowance. Oh almost forgot the obligatory candle holders and various dog and cat ornaments/wall hangings or whatever  ::)

Easy answer :: Some tissues for the tears as we leave and a set of return ticket to get back to kalian as soon as we can

Ha Ha, BL....I just like self diagnosis and as its virtually impossible to get a doctor's appointment without a letter from the Queen these days...and certainly not in work-friendly hours, I like to buy these to take if I know I'm coming down with some sort of infection. Just call me Dr K4E. Suppositories may be in this year's list though :P :P
Yes Babs....bored now, thought I'd make my own fun
We have hundreds of evil eye things...I mean hundreds.
itstime, I forgot I buy tealight holders and covet the lamps in the "Lamp Shop" too :)

The first time went to Turkey on a trip to Saklikent we ended up buying a wall carpet from the collective the coach stopped at. Since discovering Kalkan we've had 2 pairs of glasses each, I'm a sunglasses snob so never by myself any but do take some back for grand daughters, pens , cat ornaments, black tea, apple & pomegranate tea, spices from the market. Janet always ends up with jewellery from MisSiliver and now she's discovered that boutique by Angora she's had dresses & a wool coat. You can see why she has 5kg extra weight coming back.

Ha ha! No little men with big willies in my suitcases but a few kilos of black peppercorns, an odd bottle of pepper sauce, a handbag, sumac, cumin, cinnamon and a few evil eyes, sunglasses and olive oil have been known to sneak themselves through customs.
I'm right with you k4e on the antibiotics too!!! :)

Apart from the obligatory Duty Free (with appropriate research), bags, and spectacles, the Jeans Shop tends to have a presence in the case home.

Also the 4 kilos of acquired food that seems to have made a new home around parts of the body - damn those restaurants!

Hi everyone. It's good to be back!

Well I have been keeping my own little bit of Kalkan alive over these dark winter days as I brought back some lovely cushion covers ( with a little bit of help from the lovely Bob and Jayne) and a table runner. Everyone comments on them and we have also bought 2 lovely Turkish lamps so our conservatory is our own little bit of Kalkan. We virtually live in our conservatory all year round so is a constant reminder.....and guess what , you all said it would happen, yes we have rebooked for this year. Can't wait. Coming a bit earlier as our daughter does her GCSEs this year so finishes a bit earlier. Great news for the bank balance! No extended family or big villa this year but I am really looking forward to it.......Back on post, I have already had an order from my neighbour for some cushion covers and my mother in law wants some more sandals as she reckons the ones she got last year in Kalkan are the most comfy she has ever had! I've also got my eye on a lovely bed throw! Think I may need to bring an empty suitcase!

We have tried several times to take home those little honey and bits covered nuts from the spice stall on the market...we never get out of the market without eating them!! ::)even when we buy them on the way out we eat them at the first stopping off point ::)  Also Copy DVDs,some are better than others but cheap so worth a punt.
Man on the market sells nice wooden carved spoons big and small, very reasonable..(hes usually up in the fruit and veg bit) next door to him is a hardware stall ..we bought little salt and pepper pots with plastic smiley face tops that you twist to make them smile and open up the holes(various colours)very cheap but they remind me of good times when I'm having my dinner....oooooooo! I do love tat and trinkets!! :P ;D

I suspect that Misty is being ironic.

Unless they're pretending, of course.

We were bringing back an empty suitcase last year so brought home a 10kg bag of oranges lol! We had just bought it and had only used a couple. They were so juicy it was a shame to leave them and at the time there wasn't anyone nearby to leave them with.
They were a lovely reminder when back in the UK!!

Over the years a selection of tablecloths, cushion covers, table runners. A gorgeous quilt for our bedroom which  has definitely developed a Turkish theme now. Hubby likes his leather belts and me a dress and the must have sandals. Àlthough unfortunately not sure if I'll be there to wear them this year as I'm on crutches hobbling with a fractured pelvis  :'( . Went for a romantic cottage break, no pun intended lol,  a few days before Christmas only to fall down the flight of stairs and had an extended holiday in the nearest hospital. No, hadn't enjoyed too much Christmas cheer, just lost my footing on the pitch black landing attempting to find the light switch on a desperate six a.m. journey to the loo. Never mind at least got out of the Christmas cooking. Physio's going good so hopefully as Arnie says " I'LL BE BACK", and it certainly won't be for the lack of trying ;)

Oh Clara, poor you best wishes for a speedy recovery!

These posts have made me realise just how much stuff we have brought back in reality, that I didn't think of at first.......
Bedspread, dressing gown, various items of clothing, cushion covers, table runner.........cuddly toy, yogurt make (only joking about the last two....)

Apart from the usual tee shirts, handbags and sandals, we take tomatoes, oranges, and various nuts. The tomatoes taste so much nicer than our local supermarket variety. I don't really know if we are contravening any laws by importing fruit and veg. Perhaps someone can let us know.

Towels......how could I forget?!!?
I buy towels and tea towels.....as many as I can fit in my case. The quality v price is unbeatable. There used to be a great towel shop in town which is now a restaurant....quelle surprise. I buy tea towels in the shop near to Cafe del Mar and towels from either Fethiye or Kalkan market.
taurus, if your case gets searched you may have your foodstuff confiscated, but we've taken those sweet-coated peanuts BL mentions home for years without any problems...and the bags of green tea we buy look distinctly dodgy. It's a chance you take...

Tat and trinkets - I like your style BL. I am returning in 54 more sleeps - the only place I have been back to as we love seeing different places but rebooked Kalkan as soon as we returned.
Back to the tat and trinkets - after discovering one of the Virgin Mary which lit up with flashing lights I when it was shook, I have an unhealthy obsession with terribly tacky snow globes - VM disco snow globe was from Lourdes which we visited on euro tour in our old VW.
I tried in vain to find one in Kalkan last year. Got one from Kas but it's not the same as there are rules to the snow globe obsession ..1. It must be pretty horrid 2. It must have the name of the place acquired from on it.
Ah well ....
Last year I took back some little candle holders, apple tea, owl bags and Raki. I would love a couple of the beautiful lamps but god knows how I would get them back home ...maybe I will have to buy a spare case ....

Never one to miss an opportunity to keep my tum happy, Black olives, Bim Hazlenuts and Eti 'Form' light biscottes. Mrs BG always puts in a few tomatoes and cucumbers.
It is what we take out that is most important though, it's always a struggle to stay within size and weight. coming home the bag only has the above weighing just a few kilos in it
