Title: California / highway 1
Post by: pw on January 05, 2014, 06:21:51 PM
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of driving Highway 1 between San Fransisco & San Diego? Would be interested to hear any thoughts on how long to take over it (I've got 2 or 3 days available before flying out to Hawaii) and where would be good to stop over.

Cheers,

pw

Yes and make sure you break the journey up by staying in Carmel.....try and hire a soft top vintage Mustang it will make it so much more enjoyable  :)

Good tip re the soft-top Mustang, we hired one for a holiday on the Gulf Coast, it made all the difference.  Enjoy your trip.

You've brought back some forgotten memories of cruising the CA highways in my first car, a soft-top Chevy Impala convertible with a rear continental kit.  Ah, sweet 17!  Next was a T-Bird, sold it for a song, big mistake!

We have done the journey in reverse and stopped over in Carmel, Santa Barbara and Laguna beach. All of which we're very beautiful in their own way. Lovely drive along big sur. enjoy

Continuing north from San Francisco, the California Coastal Highway crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and has even more dramatic coastal scenery all the way up to the Oregon State Line.  The small town of Mendocino, home to a lot of Murder, She Wrote, is very picturesque, and the Giant Redwoods are not to be missed.

And, for a different way of experience this coastline, try Amtrak's Coast Starlight from LA to San Francisco and onwards to Seattle.  Sitting in the observation car sipping West Coast wines and looking over the Pacific and high up into the Cascade Mountains takes a lot to beat.
