Title: Antler's Holiday - Day 6 - Sept 6th
Post by: antler on September 06, 2013, 05:40:24 AM
Another totally still morning.  Just the birds in the trees behind me, the trickling of the pool water and a perfectly calm sea. Out to the right, the sun has just caught the top of the masts, high up on the hill.

Yesterday was Market Day. Think watch battery, Hollister T-shirt, spring onions, fresh coriander and fresh figs. At first, there was no coriander, but Nice Vegetable Man said “5 minutes” as he got on his mobile phone. I packed a bag of the freshest vine tomatoes at just over TL1 a kilo. Perfectly on time, a chap arrived on a scooter with a bag of coriander, paying my couple of lire for the herbs as Nice Vegetable Man picked up another tomato, smiling, and put it in my bag.

After breakfast at Café Ev & some groceries on the way back down the hill, we chilled out by the pool until the taxi came at 2pm. It was only around 15 minutes to get to Patara and we had arranged for the taxi to be back at 7.30pm, so we could see the sunset.

The waves were rolling in and people were enjoying themselves in the sea, still stood up some 50 - 75 metres away. The breeze was warm yet refreshing and the next four hours of an iPod moment fixed it for me.

By 6pm the beach was emptying – just like the bottle of Lal! -  and by 7, we were just some of the few remaining people, cameras at the ready. Eva Cassidy was on the iPod as I walked the beach along the water’s edge.

Patara really is a beautiful beach. It is stunning. But it doesn’t belong to us, it belongs to the turtles and we were just self –invited guests to their home and paradise for a few hours.
The sun increased its intensity of deep orange as it slid into the sea and the beach took on a different beauty all of its own. It was the perfect sunset, on the perfect beach and I felt quite choked, re-shooting my short video to hide my croaking voice.

As if saying goodbye to a close relative, we left the home of the turtles and ambled back to the car park and the waiting taxi, wishing to do that one more time this holiday, at least.

Back at Villa Kismet, I pushed the Outback round to the dining terrace and lit the gas. Chinese Chicken thighs, which had been in the marinade all day, beef steak, cacik and tabbouleh – with some borek and aubergine salad left from Kazim, yesterday.  Simple, easy and tasty and the chicken so soft, I am sure Kazim would have been pleased.

The figs are large, ripe and juicy and they are for a light lunch today: lightly toasted bread, a drizzle of orange blossom honey, with some small chunks  of blue cheese on top of sliced fresh figs. While Mrs A will have her favourite, a fresh beetroot, blue cheese and pear salad. Job done.

And after that, as if Patara was not a large enough treat yesterday, Mehmet can reward me with another shave.

A heavenly start to my dark, rainy Manchester morning. How much was the return cab fare if you don't mind me asking Antler?

TL100 return. Dropping us off and then fetching us later. There are 7 of us.

Then, TL5 each for us to get in. So a total of TL135 for 7.

Another great report antler. Thanks so much for sharing your holiday with us. Patara at sunset is definitely on the agenda for next year and my tummy just rumbled at the thought of those figs, honey and cheese - must try that too! Have a great day.  8)

That sunset was stunning Antler, thank you for sharing it with us.  Raining here in London and total change of weather from yesterday so especially good to have your reports on Kalkan, complete with videos.

We are really going to miss these reports when you return to UK.  Fortunately I am due to be out in Kalkan myself in just over a week and can experience some of the things you have enjoyed.

Are you taking one or two photos to add to the gallery here?  I hope other forum members remember to check it out from time to time.   There have been some new additions recently (sorry, none from me, maybe after this visit?)

Keep the reports and and videos coming Antler

Look forward to next instalment, and loving the video clips as well. Babs, i'm keeping everything crossed for you!!

At last the crocs in action  :D ;D albeit on sand!! They need a thorough working out on Kalkan beach....into the water and out. Nothing else will do.
Have to say cheered me up no end to see them giving you your moneys worth, Steve. The sand is incredibly hot at Patara this time of year, having made the fatal mistake of heading for the showers barefoot during August a few years ago, I know what pain it can inflict. If only someone had you tubed that little dance
Thanks for your great posts, certainly brightening up the end of Summer in UK.
