Title: Turkey the New Ottomans BBC Radio 4
Post by: ak1945 on July 30, 2013, 12:49:23 PM
I have just listened to this, very interesting and also quite chilling. Worth listening to if interested in Turkish affairs and politics.
ps Turkey has more journalists in prison than anywhere else (at least countries where these figures are available) including China

Thanks for the tip.  An interesting summary but one which does not mention something frequently talked about by many Turks.  Fethullah Gulen and his 'program'.  Supposedly this gov is following the program which starts with stripping the military of power, then neutralizing the opposition in every sector, then changing the constitution and, last but not least yavash, yavash introducing legislation in keeping with Islamist values and lifestyle.  All of this has happened or is underway.

It also underemphasizes the new wealth and social mobility of the religious middle class, formerly disenfranchised on every front.  But it is a good summary.

Bought it on Kindle.  So far good analysis but very academic, as was her earlier book.  Have to be highly motivated and interested in where Turkey is going to get through this book.  But I will recommend it if you like a serious read.
