I seem to recall someone wrote about someone locally doing regular trips to Ikea in Izmir and taking orders. Is that still the case or was I imagining it?

You heard the right thing. When you go to Need Compagnie Kalkan (Kalamarroad at the beginning at the right side) you can order from the Ikea guide.

They have the brochures in Turkish and English. They do make a small charge for this service, but I personally found them to be very good.
