Title: Current exchange rate
Post by: pw on April 08, 2013, 07:49:33 PM
A question for the folks already in Kalkan.......what's the best exchange rate available on the streets?

Currently 2.64 with Travelex buy on line/collect. How does that compare?

Cheers,

PW

That's better than in town. We will be heading there today! Do you need ID in a bank?

Hi Lizilu 20,

Yes you need to take your passport, whenever you change money at the banks, unless you have an account there.Ziratt bank is just above Deniz bank and is the national/government bank. You can change money here as well and the rate maybe even better than Deniz.

However both will be much better than down in the town.Go today though as the banks are closed over the weekend.Good luck

Are any of the shops offering exchange....if they are open? If they are how does that compare with the banks?
Also, do you need to go into the bank to find out their rates....? Never seen anything outside advertising them.....or have I just been walking past with my eyes closed ::) ::)

There are lots of shops offering to exchange money the rate has been 2.67 for the last week or so. You get slightly more at a bank 2.69 at Deniz on Friday and 2.70 at IS bank yesterday.

Hi kalkan4eva,

You will always get a better exchange rate at the banks, than you do in town. They dont advertise the rate outside, but they will have a higher rate....Just take your passport to exchange money in a bank.Banks are only open Monday to Friday though,so its the town exchange places at the weekend.

cheers alantj and Mayday1.
We are staying very close to the banks and often use the atm's but never thought of going in for exchange. If you're changing a couple of hundred in sterling the higher rate may get BH an efes or two, so its worth it ;)
I appreciate Mon-Fri, but any idea of opening times..? thanks :)

Hi kalkan4eva,

I am fairly sure that they open 9.30 am until 12.oopm.Close at 12.00pm for lunch until 1.00pm.Reopen at 1.00pm until 5.00pm and im sure these times apply to all banks, certainly Deniz and Ziraat.

Remember that when you go in to the bank to get a ticket from the machine to keep your turn...........because if you dont, you will wait a long time as it is on a first come first serve basis.

I believe you need to hold an account at the bank in order to exchange currency without  commission being charged.

Hi Charlie,

You dont need a bank account.I have an account at Deniz but i always exchange at ziratt, where i dont have an account. You will get the best rate at Ziratt with no commision..........just have your passport with you.Give it a go.

I looked into getting some TL yesterday in the UK...avoid the post office!! they are the worst on the high street with a measly 2.52...elsewhere were giving 2.67 /2.69.....not a big difference from kalkan?

At the ATM outside Isbank, (opposite corner to Yali/Deniz bank) they now have an automated exchange facility that gives a better exchange rate than inside.
On the first ATM screen, you select exchange then your language and the currency that you want to change, it then gives you the current exchange rate. A trap opens and you put in your cash, the machine checks it and you confirm the amount. The machine then advises how much you will get and another trap opens and gives it to you when you confirm.
No passport needed to exchange there or Yapi Kredi.

that sounds great...! might give that a try and avoid the ticket scheme inside the banks :) Do you get a receipt, BubblesG?

2.78 @ Deniz bank

@K4E, I may have missed the option to print one in Kalkan but, I got one in Fethiye on Monday and 2.79TL which rounded down to 2.78 after commission.

Yes you do get the option for a receipt.

By the way, I was a little nervous about inserting mixed notes (i.e. £10 &£20), so I'm not sure whether or, how the ATM's cope with that but, it didn't say that you could not insert a mix of them. There is however, an option to insert more after the initial batch so, I guess, that may be the way to do it.

Has anyone noticed that the wholesale bank exchange rate has now hit 3TL to the £?

I changed a wodge of cash last week at the Isbank ATM and thought I was doing well to get 2.93TL to the £.

Went to order a few lira till I can change some in Kalkan, but was surprised to see M&S go from 2.81 the other day to 2.65 this morning. It has just crept up to 2.786!
I know I can get better here in UK but easy to put on my m&s card and no charge if I pay on time.

Can any one currently in Kalkan let me know the general rate for today so I can get a true comparison.
Thanks

We got 2.95 in Deniz bank on monday, but that was as an account holder there.
For just straight cash exchange it was 2.90.

You can go to the kalkan banks yourself to change money, but remember your passport,as you will need it to exchange money. No commision in the banks and you dont need to be an account holder. However you will get the same rate as an account holder.
You will only get a slightly lower rate in kalkan old town.If you can change the majority of your holiday money in kalkan, this is best as you will always get  a much higher rate in kalkan than the uk.

That's a good rate, Tesco's been around the 2.76 for the last few weeks, maybe change less here too before going as we really only need enough for the first day or so. We always use the jewelers near the Moonlight for exchange but think we'll try Deniz this year if you don't have to be an account holder, maybe we'll get a better deal but must not forget the passport.

Deniz is good, but a little further up road ( 200 yards ) is ziratt bank. This can be a little quieter than deniz. When you go in to either, both operate on a ticketing system,so remember to get yourself a ticket as soon as you go in and this way you can keep your turn.

The town exchange places are only a bit less than the banks, but not much, and sometimes the banks can be busy and who wants to spend their holiday waiting to be served. If you want to change up quite a bit ( a few hundred ) though,i would still choose the banks, regardless of the queue.........because you will get that bit more, which translates to a few more G & T's or Efes...............Cheers

Don't forget IS Bank has an ATM putside that allows you to exchange cash and gives you the bank rate that day - and no ticket system queue :)

I think we can say a trip to the bank is definetly the way to go,either waiting inside with lovely cool air con or going down the ATM route,we are going to get a better rate and that can only mean one thing for everyone...........Extra G&T's/Efes.....Lets celebrate

Almost at 3TL to £ again tonight. (£ is also stronger against $ and € today.)

I see that after hovering between 2.94 and 2.98 for the past week, it hit 3 last night and is at 3.025 tonight. That's another 2 Efes on £1,000.
