I was all geared up for my third New Year in Kalkan, then 4 weeks ago my world was turned upside down. I had a horrible, freak accident in Berlin where I slipped on a wet hostel floor and destroyed my left leg. Snapped tendons, shattered kneecap and broken leg. Had a big op in Germany where they rebuilt my leg using steel plates, screws, multiple bovine bone grafts and 20 metal staples down my shin. Two weeks ago I was repatriated to the UK, where I have been lying in a leg brace on a sofa in Manchester ever since.

I couldn't bear to cancel my New Year flight to Dalaman on 27th December - I've been hoping for a miracle that would allow me to continue with my trip.  I've made some phone calls, and Flythomascook are happy to take me on board with special assistance and disabled seat, my travel insurance company (surprisingly) are happy to cover me, and having experienced the fantastic assistance available for wheelchair users at airports -, for the first time, I am having a glimmer of hope that my dream might come true. I've even had an invitation to join a local Anglo/Turkish family for dinner at Moussaka on New Year's Eve!  As I would be travelling alone, a few people have tried to put me off the idea, claiming it's too risky, whilst others believe if everything is done safely, it could do me the world of good, medically anhd psychologically. I'm going to wait until Christmas Eve to make my final decision.

So, if any of you spot a very happy-looking girl, sitting in a funky blue wheelchair outside Kleo on New Year's Day, sipping a cold Efes - chances are, it will be me. Having overcome all the odds.  The only thing is, I will have to postpone my planned charity swim until next year.

Happy Christmas everyone! x

Omg you poor thing Christina how unlucky.  Love your determination to still come out to Kalkan for new year.  Me and my wife are on the 17:20 flythomascook flight out of Gatwick, if its the same flight we wil keep an eye out for you.....can't help re transfer as we only have a small car and 2 large suitcases, so no room for a 3rd + plastered leg.  Hope t all works out for you.  ;)

OneLove - thank you - sorry for the late reply, the last 24 hours have been very hectic.
Tomorrow we are packing, and then we are just going to enjoy time with the family before we fly out on 27th.  We were discussing the Loony Dook today, and think my o/h may be up for it, I might sneakily pack something fancy for him to wear!  Will look forward to meeting everyone on the beach!

Christina - we wish you a speedy recovery,  if everything else can be arranged the holiday may be just the tonic - hope to see you there for NYE - best wishes.

Hi folks,

Thanks for all your get-well wishes.  I didn't make it to KK for NY after all.  On Christmas Eve Flythomascook did a U turn, and decided I could not fly with my broken leg elevated - so that was that.

There will be other times - and to console myself, I have been doing some self-indulgent browsing of random home-made videos of Kalkan on YouTube. I wanted to share this one, which I found massively moving, as the soundtrack fits in perfectly with how I feel about this special place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWXE6_JyDJc

So - with a very heavy heart - here is my Lovesong to Kalkan. Happy New Year everyone! x

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
 Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again
 Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
 Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again

However far away I will always love you
However long I stay I will always love you
Whatever words I say I will always love you
 I will always love you
