Travellers Cheques
« on: May 16, 2009, 10:01:54 AM »
We''ve been to Kalkan three times, the last time was two years ago. We''ve always taken some sterling and some travellers cheques as we don''t like ATMs, but I''ve been reading on another forum that it''s now really difficult to change TCs in Kalkan. Can somebody please confirm if this is correct? We''ve always changed them in the jewellers, about half way down on the right, guy with the pony tail, and never had any problem.
Also we''ve always paid for things like boat trips in sterling as they seemed to prefer it, is that still the same?
We are going on 5th June so I''d be grateful for any help.
Thanks.

We know people that still use travellers cheques...the post office changes them ...so does the local jewellery shops although the rate might not be what you get at a bank etc.Why so nervous about atm''s ?we have never had problems in many years of kalkaning....Kalkan has plenty of atms now, advantage being you don''t have to carry your passport around ;)
People Of Britain.. When your missus asks "Does my bum look big in this? Never say "Dunno your blocking the light."... just sayin ????

Last year there was a notice in the Deniz Bank that if you wished to have travellers cheques exchanged you need a Turkish Tax number obtainable from the Maliye in Kas !!

Seems like a way to "lose" the travellers cheques business...still plenty of options if travellers cheques are your chosen way..personally it''s atm on a Nationwide flex account(widely covered already on these pages)...no charge to withdraw your own money in Turkey..and quite rightly so !! ;)

Thank you, we have now been into the Nationwide to apply for a flex account, seems like the best option! I don''t have a problem with ATMs but my husband thinks they will chew up his card and steal all his money!

If you use the ATM when the bank is open you can go in to sort out any problems if your husband is concerned about loosing his card/money. We use the ATMs all the time and have never had a problem.

Has anyone been to Kalkan in the last few weeks/days and successfully cashed travellers cheques?  Where?

I would like to cover all bases with our holiday budget.

I haven't been since last September but I always take travellers cheques with me.  Plenty of places will change them for you.  I personally use either Abi Travel or Infinity Jewellers next door.  Both are at the top of the main street just past Moonlight Bar.  The post office stopped changing them a couple of years ago though.
