TRANSFERRING MONEY
« on: November 08, 2019, 12:54:02 PM »
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction with this. I have recently bought a villa in Kalkan and have opened a bank acount at Deniz bank. But I cant seem to transfer any money, sterling or liras without getting charged for it. halifax and Lloyds I get charged at both ends which is About £10 each end. I tried  XE Money and sent 147tl (£20) just to see if I'd get charged but only 119tl appeared in my account with no explanation of where 28tl had disappeared to.
Does anyone know how to do it for free or cheaply, any help would be appreciated,
thanks
Guy

The only way I've achieved zero charges is to:
1. Send gbp from your uk bank by iban transfer to a revolut account.
2. Do a gbp iban transfer from the revolut account to your turkish bank sterling account.
3. Sell your gbp and buy lira within your turkish bank account when the rate suits you.

I have been using TransferWise for the last couple of years. It has a fixed charge of just 65p for a transfer and gives a better exchange rate than you will get from the Turkish banks.

Another way is to bring cash with you, unlike here the Turkish banks are happy to deal with cash before I found Transferwise I would bring out £1,500 each time we visited which paid for the villas running and management costs.

Deniz bank charge for receiving sterling but not lira so I always use TransferWise straight to my lira account with no charges. Very quick service.
