Sad news Nationwide have decided that from June they will charge their customers when using credit/debit cards. All ATM transactions and credit card transactions. Found article in Daily Express.  >:( >:( :( :(

According to their website (if I''ve read it correctly) they will not be charging a fee for transactions made in Turkey.

Thats how I read it too. For the purposes of their account Nationwide classify Turkey as being European.

Turkey according to the website is definitely exempted from the charges.

We''re quite pleased about that seeing as we''ve just opened a Nationwide account. Funny that the charging business wasn''t mentioned to us at the time. Maybe just an oversight on their part. ;D

I had a look at applying for an account with Nationwide, but it seems as thought, unless I am going to use this as my main account then I am not able to open one??? Can anyone else advise, as I am quite happy banking with my current bank for UK transactions etc.

We did not apply for an Account but took out a Nationwide Visa card that does not charge fees for use and gives good rate on it ;)

I have also recently opened a flex account and the question about a main account did not arise.I  was quite open about why I wanted the account. They double checked re Turkey and confirming they class it as Europe. Simples  :D

Cool, maybe I will go into the branch near me then and do it there. Seems like on the internet when you apply you need to say that it will be your main bank account. Thanks for the help guys!!

I opened a Flex account 2 months ago and put all of our holiday spending money in it. We withdrew 250 lira on the first day ( wanted more but pressed the wrong buttons!!) We tried to withdraw more but it kept saying insufficient funds. We tried again the next day and got the same message. We phoned Nationwide who said there was no problem with our account so we tried again and still didn't get any money. All our holiday money had to be withdrawn from another account and we will be charged commission on that. The moral is, I guess, don't rely completely on the Nationwide account.

I have been with Nationwide for over 2 years now, and in their defence have had no problems at all infact have received very good service, much better than my previous back who I had been with for over 30years.  And I don't get any charges, Turkey is still under their Europe heading.

We tried 2 different banks and had the same problem at both so I guess we were just unlucky.

I've used my Nationwide card for many years in Kalkan with no problem at all. Does slightly concern me that others have experienced difficulty as it's usually the only method I have of getting money in Kalkan other than resorting to a credit card. However due back in October and will again be relying on my trusty Flex card.
