Blackberry bill
« on: August 10, 2009, 05:56:16 PM »
Just wanted to post a warning to all those who take adult offspring with them to Kalkan. Our eldest daughter has a Blackberry and continued to use it for e-mails whilst in Kalkan - I can hear the cries of "NOOOOOOHHH" as a type.
The result was a whopping £604 bill  :o :o which, once I'd been peeled off the ceiling and spoken with O2, was eventually rescinded.
Just thought I'd share that one  ;)

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

This happened to me too.  I rang my provider (Vodafone in this case) and said, "Yes I know I'm a saddo, but do you honestly think my husband would tolerate me sending emails at 10 minute intervals all the way through the night and day and for the whole 14 days?"

Their reply was, "But you were searching for data"!!!!!!!!!!

Luckily they too waived the £300 odd bill, luckily, cos it was a work BlackBerry.  I had been plucking up courage to tell my boss when I noticed the itemised bill, listing item after item of data searching!

I now turn the network thing off most of the time and just put it on once a day.  The very annoying thing was that I actually had a laptop with me so I could access my emails on that, but was enjoying lying on the sunbed, sending emails while I chilled.  Lesson learnt!

It is worth knowing that some restaurants and hotels have free Wi-Fi access so if you have a wi-fi phone or laptop you can access the net for free.  We were at the Pirat in June and were able to access this fantastic site, EK, and of course our e-mails.
Regards
Tyros

I too, have been caught out in the 'Blackberry trap'.....£500 bill, but no discount from T-mobile.  I've now bought a Turkish mobile & sim, plus I take my laptop which I've downloaded Skype!!

More money to spend in Kalkan!! :)

I have a blackberry but always make sure I follow the following procedure before I go abroad  ;)

Press the Blackberry button to get to the Main Menu
Select Options (the spanner)
Select Mobile Network
Under Data Services, select Off When Roaming

This allows you to use your blackberry as a phone but turns off the constant data stream  :)

forgot to say, those on O2 remember to sign up to ICS, its a couple of quid or free on £35 per month tariffs and slashes your call costs whilst in Turkey and your text messages come out of your monthly allowance at a rate of 1 text = 4 from your allowance (but doesnt really cost as most tariffs come with 100s of inclusive texts)  :)

I am on a contract with T-Mobile, but with all the recent hype in the news about inflated bills I have decided that when we come to Kalkan (1 week 5 days!!) I am going to leave my phone at home just to be safe. We have a PAYG 02 sim that we are going to top up and get the international bolt on for. That way we will get reduced price calls and we can keep an eye on what we are spending!!  ;D
