DIY tools
« on: February 20, 2017, 12:53:07 PM »
Hi owners,

As a new owner i was thinking of taking some basic DIY tools (small portable drill etc) from UK  through the airlines as hold luggage - just wondered what its like these days of heightened security checks?  Alternatively where is the best DIY tool shop in or near Kalkan?

Probably be doing a fair amount of general repairs/repainting. Anything DIY wise worth taking that you can't get easily in the local Kalkan shops?

There are at least 2 shops in Kalkan selling hand and power tools, one just along from Kaya and another opposite it, good range of tools, electrical fittings. plumbing supplies paint etc etc..
I have a very responsible position...
When anything goes wrong I’m responsible!!

I would advise to def bring out from the uk. Much cheaper & better quality. From my experience most of the stuff you buy in Turkey is very inferior compared to what you get in the uk. Albeit, hoboo is right you can buy what you want in Kalkan.

No problem in your hold luggage 👍

Good luck with your new property, I'm sure your going to love it.

We purchased a drill and few other bits from the hardware shop just down from Yali, good quality and reasonably priced.  We attempted, in January, to bring a metal tape measure in our hand luggage when we travelled via Istanbul. Unfortunately this was not allowed and we were forced to put the hand luggage in the hold (thankfully at no extra cost to us). Seemed a little extreme, but reassuring they are being vigilant.

We've taken out in our hand luggage a drill/drill bits and electric screwdriver (both used quite a lot). We just got cheapish ones here when they were on offer and they've been good enough. We also took out a small selection of screws, wall plugs, picture hooks, etc. things you tend to have in your shed at home. You can buy them there but it was just easier to have a bit of a selection in the cupboard without having to nip out for one. We also took out low energy light bulbs as they were much more expensive in Turkey.

I don't mean to be a 'topper' but I worked here (I was a house builder in the uk for 30 years)  building a villa for 6 months and I can assure you the standard of building materials & tools is no where near uk standards.
