Death penalty for animals http://www.ehdkd.blogspot.com/

Turkish Government is preparing to make an amendment to the present Animal Protection Law which dictated that all stray animals be neutered and released back to their territory. The cruel amendment which is signed by the PM Erdogan and submitted to the parliament for approval, abandons neuter and return and states that all stray animals will be collected by municipalities to be neutered and kept in shelters until the shelters are too crowded then to be   released to “natural life parks”
We don’t believe the mentality which keeps animals in such “death camps” will be able to look after thousands of animals in what they call “natural life parks.”  The  way municipalities handle dogs for years is a clear proof that  what they call natural parks will turn into dump areas where dogs will either starve to death or kill each other because of starvation.

The animal protection law which was issued in 2004 obliged municipalities to neuter  and return stray animals to their territories and clearly forbid release of animals out of the city.  This was the only way for humane population control in a country where adoption of animals is not customary.  Although the implementation of neuter and return was far from being efficient and satisfactory still it was a progress compared to the practice of poisoning that was the practice before the law.  Furthermore, with the help of campaigns of animal protection organizations  there was an increase in  awareness about stray animals and  in tolerance towards them.

With the issuance of the latest amendment, we are back in square one. The animals which found a territory   in streets and parks will be collected to be dumped in isolated areas or locked up in terrible shelters.     Days of massacre of innocent souls is about to begin.

Please help to make this terrible law be cancelled. Make your protest be heard by the Turkish government by writing to the Ministry of Forests, Prime Ministry and the parliament commission for environment in the mail addresses below:
