Help with restaurant & bar prices please :-)
« on: August 10, 2012, 04:42:19 PM »
Hi there everyone!

I am coming back to Kalkan after a few years of trying out other destinations. Unfortunately no where can quite live up to Kalkan so coming back in May 2013.

I was last there in 2010 and prices for two people were between 60 - 80 TL for starters, mains and a bottle of vino. Is this similar now or have there been increases? Obviously the likes of Aubergine, Trio etc were more expensive.

Also I have noticed on a few threads that some places have closed down, I am wondering (and hoping) that Sofra, Belgins Kitchen and The Olive Garden are still there?

Also does anyone have any recommendations for anywhere new that I wouldn't have seen back in 2010?

Look forward to hearing from you

Hannah x

The Olive Garden certainly is. However, I didn't think that the food was as good this year.
There - over there, there are.            To - Going to
Their - belongs to them.                     Too - In addition, Also
They're - Short for they are.

Pedant! me?

On the other hand, Sofra still open and my favourite meal this year..
New places to try..White Table, Gourmet, Escudo and Hunkar.
Enjoy
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

It all depends where you eat we find on the whole our bills this year were around 100 lira for say 1 starter 2 mains bottle wine and a drink after but you can do for cheaper if you so wish. All the ones you mention are still there (tho not been to any of them) but who knows in 2013 as you know things in kalkan change often. Our stand outs this year were Gourmet, kalamaki and the biggest new one for 2012 Agora (slightly cheaper but every bit as good).

Belgin's is still there, as is Sofra and Olive Garden.  We went to Agora the other day and can vouch for the food and service.  We are trying Escudo tomorrow night.  A new place for us last night was Iso's kitchen.  It's near Sofra further down that road heading towards the end of old town. The food was absolutely beautiful and excellent service.  We shared some liver to start with, then had perfectly cooked lamb chops, rice, salad and a few chips.  It was all cooked to perfection and beautifully presented.  Then we had a beautiful plate of fresh fruit.  We also had a bottle of red wine and water.  The bill came to 98tl for two. Theey also do a mixed mezze plate for 9.90 which would easily be enough for two for lunch.  They do casseroles as well, seafood and fish and barbecued meats.  Fabulous food and service.

Hi Popps, Gourmet terrace used to be Ibos terrace its in the town next to raw diamond - opposite kalamaki just down from Gironda hope that makes sense, and Agora is opposite Ramis and next door to Cafe Zula just across the road from Mojito bar hoping you know where these are maybe someone else can describe it better  ???

Brilliant! Thank you all. I am so excited to get back there!

Next year will be the first time in an apartment, self catering. Do you all have any tips as to where to shop for food etc?

Thanks again! Xx

Best supermarket is Yali.  Lucky has cheap wine. The fishmonger below the old taxi rank near fotos pizza is good.  Greengrocer just above the roundabout or the market on Thursdays of course. Spices an herbs the market or there's a place in the middle of town. Hunkar is so cheap it's almost as cheap as eating in!! Butcher just above the roundabout is good.  :P ;D ;D ;D

If it's any help Sofra was very good as was a new restaurant Sade (more or less next door to each other), also Baharat; in my opinion the Olive Garden (rooftop) was not great  :( all are similarly priced.  If you are staying by chance up the Kalamar Rd near the Elixir Hotel, Cafe Aqua was excellent and very reasonable price wise.

In terms of Supermarkets, BIM is great for basics such as water (half the price of the others), Migros which is new and just before BIM as you go up the hill is good, Yali was the most reasonable for the price of Wine (we found) and Kipa (part of Tesco, which is opposite the bottom end of the Kalamar Rd) was the cheapest for Effes when we were there at the beginning of the month.

Have a fab holiday  :)
Lou :)

Hi All,

Only me again.

Thank you for all your help on this! 5 months and we'll be sunning it up in Kalkan, so definitely on the budget planning now!

Just wondering if anyone could tell me, roughly, how much a weekly shop for breakfast/lunch/beers/wines would be for a week? Thinking of eating out at night, can't be bothered cooking too much at night!

Also does anyone know how much taxis from Kalamar to Kalkan are these days?

Many thanks

Hannah x

Hi Hannah
its very difficult to judge how much you'd spend on a weekly shop - we're all so different and like different things.
As a rule we budget around £130 per day during our stay but allow around an extra £100/£150 at the start of the holiday for a basics shop. Depending on where you shop, what sort of food you like - if you want fresh chicken for lunch its going to cost more than bread and cheeses for example..?
That £130 is our daily spend allowance - fresh food, drinks, meals out etc...for two adults. Some days we don't spend it all and the residue goes into "the kitty" and towards the end of the holiday we have a look at how much is in that pot and generally I tip it into the K4E bag fund or...and only if I have to....it gets partially tipped into the "presents for home fund"...or we go a bit mad with it  ;D Very occasionally we dip into the following days funds if we've over indulged, but soon make it up...I work on a rolling three days funds at any one time.
So for clarity we divide all our money into funds:-

The daily fund
The travel and trips fund
The Big Shop fund - this is a one-off and any reserves quickly gets tipped into "the kitty"
The Kitty
The presents for home fund
and last but not least (and most importantly...Misty look away now..) The K4E bag fund

Works for us :)
You can of course spend a lot less than £130 per day and with a bit of effort you can spend more ;) We only spend what we bring with us, and often don't spend it all...although believe me, I've tried :)

Think I need a lie down now...or should I go and fight George Osborne for his job? :-*

K4E what a Wonder Woman you are! Would you like to come and organise my life please?! I could do with you to sort me out!
Right we'll try and work off that...we are getting married in August though. May have to try and do a tad cheaper. Do you think a budget of £50 per night for a meal starter, main and bottle if wine for two is realistic or do I have head in the clouds?!  ;D

Thanks again  :)

As I'm sure the esteemed K4E would agree you can eat quite cheaply in Kalkan....I'm sure you could get a lovely meal for £50. Just don't forget to factor in trips, other drinks, lunches etc.
