Grocery Delivery, Toys and Baby Clothes
« on: April 09, 2012, 05:13:21 PM »
Apologies for the title and I hope this is the best section!

We are in Kalkan in exactly 5 weeks today so the countdown is offically on!  As I mentioned in previous posts, this is our first holiday with our baby daughter (7 months) so we are having to think about things we have never had to before!

We are self catering for the first time and will do a "big shop" when we get there for the main essentials.  Rather than having to try to and transport a lot of heavy bags back to the apartment I'm aware that certain supermarkets do a delivery service so that is probably the best option for us.  Does anyone know which supermarkets provide this service and where the closest/cheapest/best one to us would be?  We are staying as the Asfiya Retreat just off the Kalamar Rd.

Secondly, we will pack a few of Jocelyn's favourite toys but will want to get a few in Kalkan to keep her occupied.  Are there any shops in Kalkan were we can pick things like this up or would the market keep some simple toys?

Finally, does the market keep children/baby clothes incase we need to pick up a few other bits and pieces.

Thanks in advance!

Would anyone have any information on which supermarkets have a delivery service?

Yali and Kartin do, not sure about the new supermarkets that have opened..sorry. Perhaps one of the residents will post on that one.
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

I have never looked specifically for baby clothes in the market but feel sure they do sell them as there are always lots of local Turkish people shopping in the market and they will need things for their children.

If you are self-catering then you may have a washing machine.   Check with the owners of the accommodation.    Things dry very quickly in the sun so you may not need too many baby clothes.    Not like hanging washing out in the UK when there is a good chance it will get even wetter hanging outside.

As baby is still very young will you need lots of different toys?    A few familiar ones are always good and if you pack light weight ones they won't use up too much luggage allowance.

I know when you are taking your first trip abroad with a young child (or even going away in UK for a day or two!) it is  natural to worry whether you have everything you need.   The people in Kalkan are very friendly and I am sure baby will be made welcome everywhere.

Have a wonderful holiday.

We cannot remember ever having seen baby clothes on sale in Kalkan, except on the markets.

dshiels raises an interesting point about supermarket deliveries. We rely upon the stuff we buy being carried up to our apartment, especially the 19litre water containers. Now Teskom, Sevil and Kartin(?) have closed, will the chains run a delivery service?
There - over there, there are.            To - Going to

oh goodness, hadn't realised Kartin had also closed :( :(  That was our closest for an Efes run :'(
There was a baby/children's shop near what used to be Seville Supermarket - now called A-101 - not sure if its still there. Its in the same block as the pharmacy.

Can anyone confirm if Kartin has actually closed. Hadn't heard that and it's also our closest.

A101,BIM and Gempa dont do home delivery services but you can always find a taxi nearby! Not sure what will happen at Migros, its still not finished inside.
I wouldnt want to give a baby the sort of toys available at the market and there isnt a proper toy shop in Kalkan. As for clothes there is a baby shop and a few market stalls that sell  childrens clothes but am sure you will be better off bringing them if you can. From what I have seen they are cheaper in UK but maybe the local mums know differently.
Yali and Kartin are just along from each other and both still open at present! The way shops are changing anything could happen in the next few weeks!! Teskom building still empty.

Thanks to everyone for the information on the supermarkets and it is good to know that a few of them still offer this service as it is definitely something we will make use of.

In relation to the baby items, we do intend to bring everything we need with us, but Jocelyn tends to be a bit bored of certain toys so rather than let her try chew the sofa, a few new toys may help to distract her for a while!

Thanks again everyone.

Oops! I had forgotten about the baby shop next to Garanti bank.

Regarding Kartin, I heard in January that they were going to close. After 15/16 years of visiting Kalkan, you would think that I would have learned not to believe anything I am told until it happens!

Dshiels

have you thought about renting a toy box, our guests have done so from Kalkan Concierge and been very happy.  Their site is down for maintenance at present but supposed to be up and running next week.  They tailor the toys to the age of the child.  Try googling Kalkan Concierge next week.

I'm becoming increasingly confused about which supermarkets are open/closed......we are going to be staying at Truffle apartments (very close to town end of Kalamar Road. Quite happy to wander up to Kartin to stock up but where would be our nearest water and bread shop for first thing in the morning?

Hi Babs
Think Smile will be your nearest. Although only a small supermarket it will have all the basics.
