Lycian Way Multi-day Hike
« on: March 15, 2012, 04:31:19 PM »
A couple friends and I have decided to hike some or all of the Western end of the Lycian Way between Ovacik and Kalkan late April.

Originally, my (lazy/cheap) idea was to stay in B&Bs along the way, but my friends have insisted that we also camp out some nights.  I have been doing some research on the route, equipment etc. (see links below), but would be interested in any experiences others have had - good B&Bs, bits to avoid, equipment suppliers, and most importantly, where to get water this time of the year...

This is also a good read. We have walked most of the Lycian way, mainly as day walks, some as overnights, but this blog brought back many memories for me. It's all lovely between Ovacik and Kalkan (apart from the bit behind Patara beach which is flat and boring).  http://turkeywalk2010.blogspot.co.uk/2010/06/walking-to-faralya.html

Mark, your question regarding water - it shouldnt be any problem at all on this part of the route  at any time of year as you will be passing through at least one inhabited village every day between the start of the trail at Ovakik and Kalkan. Lots of accommodation options too.

John - thanks, sending you an email separately.

Adidasfish - thanks again for the information.

As information to all , in researching I have found that there is a Coleman (trekking gear) distributor in Turkey - www.kampsepeti.com.  I have not used them yet but they seem helpful.  I will be bringing kit with me but need to get a small gas canister with a screw valve - cannot remember seeing these in Kalkan.

Well we (two fifty-somethings and a twenty-something) did a three day hike from Ovacik to Gavuragili (60km).  We were in tents two nights and spent one night in Mama's Pension in Kabak.    Never did get a gas cylinder but it was not a problem.

I did have some concerns before setting out especially with regard to my female companions,  but we experienced nothing but great hospitality along the way. I hope to do some more treks like this.

When I get back to London I will post a few photos and routes for those that are interested.

Onelove,

I do have GPS for our route and a few pics of the relevant areas.  Will post when back in London although I am hating the idea of leaving tomorrow.

As promised, here are the tracks and a few photos from our three day hike from Ovacik to Gavuragili.  We had a really great time.  It was challenging for us and we never managed to walk up Yildiz Sokak in Kalamar Bay which was my goal; however, there is a next time.

I used a GPS app so you can see the distance and elevation changes, some pictures - sorry I was focused on tracking where we were.  My companion has loads of pictures and I am waiting for her to OK publishing some of them.

Day 3 Boğaziçi to Gavuragili

It was a lovely hike; challenging for me to keep up with my Australian companions.  People we met were great.  It is definitely something I want to do more of in Turkey.

Meant to express my thanks to M&M for all the advice prior to the walk.  It was all new to me - camping and paying attention to way marks as opposed to just following others - and all three of us appreciated the advice.

Peter

The GPS tracks can be downloaded from EveryTrail.  You can use the app Gaia GPS on iPad or iPhone.  It works very well for importing the GPS tracks and then downloading the relevant maps. And, it only costs about £7.  More of an insurance policy on the bits of the Lycian Way that we did as the way marking is in pretty good shape.
