Hi Everyone,

Im thinking of swapping my personal phone from O2 to Virgin Mobile - Has anyone used Virgin Mobile before? Are they any good? What are the call charges like when abroad?

Mrs BG has a sim only monthly contract with Virgin.
As with any UK provider we are careful about making and receiving calls when abroad. They do detail the charges on their website and, when you arrive in any country they send a text when you first switch on to remind what those charges are.
EU charges are 36p per min to send, 11p per min to receive and 11p per text.
We get 600 anytime/network mins + 600 texts and 1gb of data per month for about £6.50. (this was originally 300 + 300 for £10 pm but threatened to go elsewhere and they did a decent deal.)
Coverage is so much better since Everything Everywhere was formed, and even in rural Dorset she gets a signal now where she didn't used to.

i was with virgin mobile once. they used to charge me 40p to recieve a txt message when i was in turkey! things may have changed now though.

They certainly have, Pam, also the wheel has been invented, candles superceded by electricity (whoever saw that one coming? I had just bought into wax mining.) and limes discovered in Kalkan.

I know people who have switched contracts from O2 to Virgin and they are very pleased but I told O2 I was leaving them after 14 years and I got a really good deal from them instead for UK calls/text and data. Charges abroad are pretty much fixed in terms of calls and texts >:(We've found its best to Skype or email home wirelessly which is free....if you have accomodation with internet access For BH's parents who aren't online we use the phone in the PTT. Saves those nasty mobile bills when you get home

I am with orange..despite being on a contract they oiked up my agreed 2 year monthly tariff due to "increased recession driven problems?" ...i contacted them but i'm apparently an idiot just to be taken advantage of !!..this idiot will no longer give my hard earned to orange..i'm moving to virgin at the end of contract(2 months) as friends have and have had no problems...the staff look older in the shop too! (they look as old as 20!! )

BL it seems that while they have you under contract, the telephone companies think that it doesn't matter how they treat customers.
Last year I had an issue with Talkmobile about cancelling my contract. (They wouldn't take my notice to leave them anything but exactly 30 days before the contract expired.) Had they been more reasonable, I might have stayed, on better terms of course.
Thankfully, my memory stretches further than 45 days and I found a far better deal with Orange which, I hope will continue to keep me happy until it ends in 2013.
