Restaurant and boat trip reviews from our recent trip....
« on: September 11, 2011, 11:50:49 AM »
Hi All, thought we'd just share some reviews of a few of our recent meals and a boat trip we took.  First evening meal was at Oz Adana, a firm favorite with us and did not disappoint. Great mixed grill and lovely fresh salads with lots of little extras "gratis" such as mini pidas, dips etc. Excellent value, really friendly service (as ever) and nice to sit up on the roof terrace. Next was Indigo for lunch. Lovely setting and great to be able to see both the harbor and the open sea. We always have the meze for 2 and a couple of other starters for a good lunch between the 2 of us (chilli pan fried cheese is lovely). Service here is never that great in our opinion, they keep you waiting ages before even acknowledging your existence and then are less than friendly. Unfortunately this time seemed even worse than usual (we have always still gone there as the setting and food is good) but this time the meze plate was considerably smaller than on previous visits so we may have to rethink going here in the future. We had a fabulous steak one evening at Kaptan (the one on the harbor), again we love the view here and the service is exceptional. The peppered fillet steak was lovely as was the meze starter. We also discovered a new restaurant which has only been open for  about 3 weeks. Cafe Ev (on the main street, set back from the road a little, opposite the belediysei building) is lovely. It has lots of different seating areas, ottoman style (including an area on the roof terrace), different table settings, sofas and games tables (Backgammon). There is a bar area and it has a wonderful menu. They do a great farmers breakfast as well as lighter lunches and a great a la carte menue which can be ordered for either lunch or dinner. In the evenings they also have a huge help yourself meze and specials. In addition to your order, you also gets lots of free extras, we were given olives, dips and a selection of homemade Turkish breads with watermelon and homemade Turkish delight at the end. We ordered fishcakes and cheese borek for starters and moussaka and mixed grill for main courses. Everything was to die for! The presentation was a good as any top restaurant but the helpings were generous and was truly delicious. All this and really well priced food and drinks - we gather that it will be open all year so this has gone straight onto our list of favorites! One restaurant already on our favorite list is Cafe Leon but this time we went for the evening "Surprise" menu for the first time.  It was absolutely delicious! A large mixed meze plate which had some excellent, more unusual additions such pumpkin fritters and a fabulous smoked aubergine dip. Then we had Kofte with lots of extras which was again wonderful and had we had very generous helpings! The finale was a wonderful citrus sponge tart and the best ice cream I've ever tasted! Whilst most of my reviews are about restaurants, I do also want to give a quick mention for Pina X boat trip. This was our second trip with Captain Abdi on the Pina X and we had a wonderful time. The food is excellent and we never fail to be impressed by his ability to produce such an amazing array (including a number of hot dishes) form a tiny galley! His style is a very relaxing one where he there to answer any queries/questions about everything you see (he is very knowledgeable) but not at all "in your face" with constant commentaries interrupting your relaxation.  Well, that's our update for now, we are back in Kalkan again in just 6 weeks so will post again if we have any updates!

Fantastic!  Cafe Ev is lovely and the Ev Borek is delicious. And to live above it, as we did until 5th September is even better because you can enjoy their food without moving off your lovely terrace.

Plus, it's the quickest place to grab an Efes when you come out of The Market on Thursdays!
