Kalkan Flower
« on: August 27, 2011, 10:23:54 AM »
Whilst at Adam's Restaurant, Adem gave us what he called the Kalkan Flower, white petals with a lovely fragrance, but not Bourgenvilla.  It looks a bit like a bizzy lizzy but isn't! We brought it home successfully and have managed to get it to root in a pot.  We have been unsuccessful in finding out what it actually is and how how to treat it.  Would anyone have any idea or be able to find out from locals what it is called.

Thanks.

Jayne and Bob

Sorry, no we can't because we also took some cuttings of bourgenvilla plants and although they have all taken, none of them have any flowers any more, so not sure which are which until they flower again!

They look just like tall rather lanky bizzy lizzies.    Prefer full sun I understand.    Colours are pink, white, salmon etc.    If I remember correctly there are a lot in the planters down the middle of the main street in Kalkan.   I don't think they always survive the winter in Kalkan although they can self-seed so new plants appear.    A neighbour in Kalkan collects the seed at the end of summer and sprinkles them round the garden.

They must appear in some of the photos in the gallery they are so typical of Kalkan.

If you manage to keep yours growing in UK they will bring back happy memories of Kalkan holidays.   Might be a good idea to bring the plant indoor in the winter especially if we have one like last year.

I have been looking at lots of photos on the internet to see if I could find a picture of Kalkan flowers to demonstrate to any on the forum who may be wondering what on earth this flower really looks like.    I have found only one photo so far.    It is on the Lizo Hotel's own website.    It is on their main page and under garden views the second picture features a pot of Kalkan flowers in the foreground.    You will see they really do look like a lanky version of bizzy lizzies.    Very pretty and flourish in the sun.

I have no connection with Lizo Hotel - never even been there although may visit for a drink/lunch next month after hearing good things about it on this forum - so not advertising.

Joan, I had also heard that in Kas they call them Kas flowers.     I wonder if each town or village claims their own name for them.

The Kalkan flowers come in a wide range of white and pinks including bi colours.  The can survive the winter in Kalkan, we put the pots in a sheltered place outside.  The garden centres sell the plants each year, generally in May and usually at 0.5 TL per plant.

Went to the Eden Project yesterday, in the tropical section there was a bed full of "kalkan flowers" apparently they are Madagascar Periwinkles.
How did they get to Kalkan?

I read that a lot of plant seeds travel hundreds/thousands of miles via birds.
They eat seeds etc and then pass them out and they germinate where they land.
Some birds, like swallows fly thousands of miles to the UK from South Africa each year.
I suppose it's possible some go from Madagascar to Turkey!   :-\
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
