Turkish Dongle
« on: August 16, 2011, 08:31:51 PM »
I know i've seen this subject before but can someone give me an update.
We dont have a phone line at the villa, so need an alternative. Wanted something so we can watch TV via internet for maybe an hour a day, and check our emails. Were in Kalkan for 2 weeks from Saturday .
What do we need, and what will it cost?
Steve

Hi We got a Turkcell one last year in the shop opposite the taxi rank. It cost about 60 lira with 1gb of prepaid download on. Think the top up was 20 lira for 4gb. Used TV BY PROXY which is 10 euro's for 1 month. There are some free downloads which hide your IP address but have never tried one. You can watch all the main channels and Sky if you have your sky ID to log in. Hope thats of some help. Regards Dave

Whilst 40 YTL seemed to be a price often mentioned for a dongle my experience last week was somewhat different. I went to the shop near Bezigans Kitchen and the main Turkcell shop opposite Kaya and both were approx 140 YTL for new dongle with SIM with another 30-40YTL for top ups.
Didn't think it warranted this expense, so used the many Wi-Fi options in cafe's and bars.
I have also thought about the option of getting a phone line put in and wi-fi in the villa. Apparently phone costs 20 YTL a month and wi-fi unlimited access 50 YTL. This might be a viable option if you could run for 6 months on 6 months off, has anyone been successful in getting this type of arrangement set up with PTT??

Hi Steve,
Are we getting anywhere here? What do you think? Have you been to see Baris? Know him well. Will check in October but wanted to have an idea before we went!

With Turkcell the top up is 39tl for 4gb, my dongle on an offer was 79tl in March, however when it went wrong and I took it back to Turkcell under the 2 yr guarantee they wanted to charge 89tl for the 'repair'!! Told them to keep it and still waiting a response from Turkcell's HQ! So rarely do Turkish guarantees seem to be just that.

If you're downloading (example watching UK TV) 4gb will not last very long - about 3-4 programmes but fine for checking emails etc. If you want to watch BBC programmes you can download somewhere with (unlimited) wireless and watch later. Hope that helps.

Can I bring a dongle out from the UK and have it topped up in the phone shop?

Interesting question, I have wondered this but suspect if you use a UK sim card you'll get charged for roaming and if you use a Turkish sim card it will get blocked after 3 weeks from first day of use like the phones. Has anyone done this?
