Ahhh everyone wants to be one of them Cosetta!  Yes there are a few of us who have bought in Kalkan and we all probably all ''kind of'' know one another.  It''s just when you hear the accent, which is very different to the other UK ones we hear so many of (and no offence to any of you English/Scottish/Welsh people!)  you do notice it!  And just for the record I don''t know too many who keep themselves to themselves, we''re usually rather loud!

Hmmm ... if you ''kind of'' know most of the Irish here, then WHO are our elusive neighbors? (villa in Kiziltas, built by Mahmoud of the Islamlar fish restaurant, just in front of the other American family who live on this hill)?  They come and go so silently I don''t realize when they''re here.  As for the accent, I could not tell one from another !  Will be interesting if I ever succeed in completing the family tree to find out where in the UK and in Ireland my ancestral blood flows from.

Hi Blue Lizard, no the wedding gift is for Sherafa from the shoe shop on the main street who gets married in October (is this your wedding Felicity?) but we are unable to go unfortunately, hubbie has to be in the Middle East  just after we get back from Kalkan, so   :( a real pity cos we have known her for almost 12 years and would have been great to have gone....Maybe I could sneak back......

Hi Mrs B
Hope you had good day in Bolton and didn''t spend too much shopping - even the sun is shining now. Just returned from work in Manchester and logged on to forum for my daily fix of Kalkan gossip. It make me feel nearer some how or is that just wishful thinking!! Only came back from Kalkan last Saturday and already counting the days till end of October when we return with some friends who have never been there and I am really excited as I know they will love it.

Hi Felicity, I deliberated over a prezzie, because transporting glass / crystal can be a bit tricky, so went to one of these specialist shops called Collectables, where you can get really nice carved, marble figures, so I got a nice contemporary white figure of a wedding couple....all smooth and carved out of one piece..  A good safe option I think cos you don''t know what other''s tastes can be, so I stuck to a very simple piece which I hadn''t seen another like and probably not in the least bit Turkish!  Not too heavy either and carefully boxed!

Traditionally a wedding ''gift'' is money - which is pinned to the bride and groom after the ceremony.  Depending on the size of the wedding party they can gather upwards of 5000 YTL which goes towards helping them create their marital home.  Of course this removes the risk of buying something that is not to their taste, although I''m sure that a present would be gratefully received (particularly if you are unable to attend the ceremony in person).

Hiya KislaBlue...had a great day in Bolton in the sunshine, though i had a shock when i saw them knocking down the old bingo hall/cinema near the market!
You''re so lucky to be going back to Kalkan in October...we have to wait till next June  :(

Have a great time and enjoy all the things we all know and love so much out there!  :)

I know what you mean Mrs B, I did not realise they were knocking down the Odean. It was a fantastic art deco building and I have fond memories of going there. My earliest memory is going with my parents and two brothers as my Dad wanted to see Spartacus, we could not all sit together as a family as it was so full. We children sat across the aisle from my parents and I caused havoc when i started sobbing inconsolably during the chariot race!!!!  I also went with my mum to watch South Pacific, it was our first "girls night out"!!!, and on my first "date".

Aww JoanH...what fantastic memories of such a lovely building!
I got a lump in my throat as i saw it from behind yesterday and the machines were knocking it all over the place...seemed disrespectful for a building that has been there for so many years and brought so much pleasure to people...tho i''m not sure how they would ''respectfully'' knock it down!
I think i first went in there as a youngster to watch a film just before it closed and became a bingo hall...then i went in many times to meet up with friends mums during bingo sessions for a free lemonade!
Ah....memories!!

I have been looking at web sites about Turkish weddings (yes, I also have been invited to Errols wedding on 20th Oct) and it''s not strictly true that the ''normal'' gift is money, it''s actually a gold coin. Clearly that is beyond most people''s budget and innapropriate as a ''friend'' rather than close family.

My friends and I are still mulling over what to buy but probably something ''English'' (sorry, no offence meant to the Scots).

Anyway, I can''t afford to be offended about where I live .....it''s Essex (but hoping to make it Kalkan soon)

Hi Blondie,

We''re from Prenton.

You will really enjoy Kalkan.  The Nur is in a good position - just a short walk from the village and very near the market on a Thursday - great if you like "genuine fakes".

I am from the Wirral but now live in Liverpool (in Aigburth) with my boyfriend who is from Anfield.  Lots of Merseysiders on here!
