Cappadocia
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:37:58 PM »
As a regular visitor to kalkan we have visited most of the local sites and so looking at visiting Cappadocia next visit.
Some questions if anyone can help:
What is the best time of year to visit May or October?
Is it drivable and if so how long does it take and what are the roads like?
Any reccommendations for stops half way if we drive
And suggestions for renting a good car for the journey as I couldn't do the journey in the Fiats I normal hire.
Thanks
john

John,

We drove to Cappadocia this October, we planned to do it in a one night stop over staying in or around Konya, but when we reached Konya itself it was the wrong time of day, & raining, a very busy town indeed, so we continue on the road, found a hotel in the middle of nowhere late afternoon.  Would suggest that if you plan a stop over, then book somewhere.  Our destination was Goreme & we were there & booked in by 11am the next morning. The roads were very good, wide & being widened, & straight.

The weather at that time was perfect, very warm during the day (very comfortable) but very chilly in the evenings/night.  The scenery was beautiful,  leaves changing colour, fantastic colours.

We stayed a week, just playing it by ear, my OH then said that he thought we could make the journey back in one day as the roads were so good,  we were prepared to give it a go. So we left Goreme at 6.30 am on a Sunday, the roads were very quiet & the first real traffic we hit was around Konya by which time it was approx 9am. We had two stops for food, not long ones, and arrived back in Kalkan just after 17.00hrs, a little bit stiff but apart from that fine.  We drove the mountain route both ways which was slower until the other side of Elmali, but it is a lovely drive. There were however plenty of Police patrols & stop checks.
We were in 4 door saloon & carried plenty of water & nibbles.

The area of Cappadocia is well worth seeing, so different around almost every corner, & plenty to see & do.

Hope you have as good a time as we did & enjoy.

Yes do look out for the police speed traps, think you have to keep below 90kpm (someone could confirm) and remember there are more daylight hours in May,            enjoy
