A couple of years ago, whilst in Kalkan, I ran up some stairs to the roof of a building, followed by my son and his gf.  Imagine my horror when the gf started absolutely screaming.  When I looked back to see what it was, I saw the biggest most awful spider I'd ever seen.  This was not a good move as I have a total indescribable phobia.  Picture the scene - my poor son stuck on the stairs with this awful thing - his mother up the stairs screaming and his girlfriend down the stairs screaming.  Both of us were absolutely inconsolable - probably me worst, as I knew I had to go back down.  Alex then had to guide me back down the stairs past this monster, which could have jumped at any time.  I was nearly sick.

This quite honestly was the worst thing ever and every time I come to Kalkan, I'm on the lookout, just in case.

Another incident which was actually quite funny concerning God's creatures occurred when I was stupidly walking around barefooted in the dark just outside our apartment.  I trod on something which didn't quite feel right.  As I took my foot off its back, the huge frog/toad jumped off into the undergrowth.  Yuk!

omigod, Jinfizzz...think I'd have spent the rest of the holiday on the roof or at least until someone removed it. You were very brave to walk past it, I'm having palpitations just thinking about your experience.

Isis, your mental note, is my entire wardrobe...I'm doomed  :(
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Why can't everybody leave these poor creatures alone? They were in Kalkan before the tourists!

The giant spiders are actually quite harmless, slow, stupid and easy to get with bug spray.  But the centipedes are another matter.  This year for the first time in 7 years we had a few big cockroachs, 3 big, long crunchy type centipedes and 2 of those spiders.  There is a man in the Belediye who will totally spray your house for TL 80.

As for those big flying bettles, let them fly away, too ugly to go after them.

I've never seen a spider in Turkey large or small!

The giant wasp/hornet things freak me out though!!
