Rummaging in rubble
« on: July 26, 2009, 12:00:54 PM »
I will only have a week in Kalkan and would like to know which of the Lycian sites are the most spectacular, apart from Tlos as I have been there, that I can get to by dolmus as I do not want to do organised excursions. Many thanks

I really enjoyed the site at Myra http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/med/demre/index.html
and of course you have the ruins at Patara which are very close.

Recommend going to see Patara. Can get there by dolmus (drops off in Patara village so need to walk) or by taxi.

Have you also checked the main website where there is a list of ancient Lycian sites, some links and 3D tours.  :)

Patara well worth a visit. We went there in July and will be going back for another look when we return in a few days time. It was very hot the day we went there so we didn't stay as long as we'd liked. It was really peaceful there only another couple walking around and a few rather large lizards!

Sorry Mr Lizard, didn't mean it  :'( Yes it did cross my mind too, have to wear lizard repellent next time, do you think they sell it in Tesko's? Oh no :o Looks like I might have upset your sensitivities again!

Patara is well worth a visit, but the beach gets extremely hot this time of year (even the sea gets hot).

If you are going to visit in August its best to get up early and hit the beach by 8:30. It will already be more than warm enough for swimming sunbathing and you will miss the crowds and 3rd degree burns on your feet.

On your way back you could try TLOS for lunch (an excellent little restaurant, just 20m down the road into Patara village).

To hit Patara by 8.30 you will have to get there under your own steam...the dolmuses don't start that early..but agree with alantj it's a lovely time to go
