SlingBox
« on: July 26, 2009, 08:59:56 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Hoping someone can help me on this one - I have finally managed to get ADSL installed in the house in Kalkan and Im hoping to get a slingbox.

Now this is the bit im stuck on - can the slingbox (or similar) connect to a TV or will I be stuck watching things on the laptop? Whilst Im not going to be a TV addict in Kalkan im wondering if the slingbox is the way to go given iplayer, sky player etc?

Anyone any tips or advice?

Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon - we connect our slingbox up to the TV!  As I understand it (and I'm not a tecchie!!) you just need 'a wire' to connect it!

Cheers!

Jon,

The slingbox allows you to remotely control a TV and transmit the picture to over a broadband link. You attach the box to your UK Skybox (or Freeview etc) and then use your computer to control your Skybox TV and recieve the picture. You can then link it to your TV (some modern TVs have the ability to link directly to the internet removing the need to route the pictures via your computer).

Hope this helps

Alan

Thanks Alan and Felicity

Ive worked out I need a Slingbox Pro here in the UK to connect to my Sky+ its puzzling me what I need in Kalkan?

I could do without having to route via the laptop if there is a way of doing this? Im guessing I need to replace my old CRT TV in Kalkan

Jon

You could buy a new tv with a built in browser but they are still quite expensive, and you can easily connect your CRT to your laptop using "TV out", if your laptop doesn't have this facility you can buy a USB stick with this conection for around £20.

Hi Jon, you cannot download or stream any material from iplayer when you are outside the UK, not sure about Sky but I'm guessing the same, so unless you download programmes before you leave, slingbox is a better option.

For the slingbox to work effectivley, you'll need to have fast broadband connection in the UK, ours is useless so doubt it would work for us.

Hi Jon,

We have a "Sling Box" at our villa, it works great, you need the fastest connection you can get in the UK and Turkey for it to work without it running slow, if that happens as it did for us when we first had it installed, it is not really watchable

So biggest mb's you can get ! !' ! if that is what you call them !  >:D ;D >:D

Cheers KD,

I have 20meg ADSL in the UK and in Turkey (ive not tested the speed) but its the TTNET NETLÄ°MÄ°TSÄ°Z Up to 8 Mbps, Unlimited package.

Lets see what Patara Prince wiring is like!

Jon,

You only need 1Mb to get a good picture. The limiting factor is the upload speed of your connection in the UK. This is usually much lower than the download speed (doesn't sound so good so you will probably find it in the small print).

As long as you really get it 764k will be fine. You can check the speed of your link here http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/. Roughly speaking 500k will give you a picture comparable to normal terestial TV.

Jon I hope you aren't getting this because you think you will watch more TV when you are married! I'm sure it won't be needed for your honeymoon.

we are thinking of doing a few "over winters" so thought we would install some home comforts - I can see us been the only people in Patara Prince during winter!
