Can you tell by just looking.

Read a very interesting article today buy a guy who claims he can tell a tourists nationality by just observing them. For example Italians the whole family very stylish including the children...French very similar..Germans brisk and business like..Americans very confident...I''m paraphrasing...do other people see this and please no more comments about Brits and FOOTBALL shirts

Well the guy that wrote the article was Dutch.....and none of his comments were in any way inflammatory it was purely interesting observations many of which we would all agree with I''m sure. In all the places in the world I have been to I can tell a Brit a mile off ( not the football shirt ) ........

Many years ago I use to work as a translator during one of the trade fairs in Munich. It could be quiet at times, and I have fond memories of my boss and I lentertaining ourselves by looking at the passers-by and deciding which country they came from, sometimes even which county!
Obviously one has to use every stereotype available, like ''all Italian men wear blue shirts'' or ''all Bavarian men have large moustaches''!!
But you are right Misty, we could see a Brit a mile away!

Fiona and I went to Prague a few years ago, and one of our favourite pastimes was sitting in one of the cafe bars, spotting nationalities. Great fun. And yes, we could spot the Brits a mile off.

The funny thing was, the (multi-lingual) waiter came over to us and started talking in Italian, thinking that''s what we were! He was gobsmacked when he found we were Brits. He said he could normally spot them a mile off too.

Obviously we are stylish, cool and chic. Yes, that would be it.

I was sitting on a step next to the shop that sells Turkish Delight (opposite Kosk) when an English lady came up to me with a large box of Turkish Delight and spoke to me in that funny way us Brits speak thinking any foreigner will understand asking " how much" whilst waving the box under my nose

While wandering around Windsor Castle a couple of years ago, one of the members of staff who was an information guide approached me asking if I spoke English. I was quite taken aback that this had happened to me at home. He had assumed I was German. It has happened many times before on holiday, ususally taken for German or Dutch. I don''t know what that says about me  

So, no you can''t always tell by just looking, however there are some very obvious examples that stand out a mile
