Drilling bathroom tiles for a shower rails???
« on: May 19, 2009, 06:20:54 PM »
We couldn''t find a shower rail for a corner bath so we are taking one out and need to fit it. Does anyone have any tips for doing this in our Kalkan apartment??

I am not worried so much about getting through the tiles but its the concrete or what ever the walls are coated with underneath. On my last visit I tried to hammer in a picture hook ..no chance it bent beautifully. Is their a special technique or drill type that we need?? My husband doesn''t know I am asking but hes not a great DIYer (he would hate me for saying that!!!) and I am worried about any impending holes in our bathroom wall!!

Any advice greatfully appreciated ..even the name of a man that can would help!!!

You need a good drill bit..one that will go through concrete/brick...when you have decided where you want to drill put a piece of masking tape on the tile and mark where you are drilling this will stop the drill slipping on the slippery tile face..(make sure your rawlplugs are a tight fit when you fit them or your rail will work loose) ;)

Ensure you are using a masonry drill bit, you can tell the difference between a masonry drill & a wood drill
as the masonry drill is tipped. When drilling tiles I always drill a pilot hole first with a smaller drill bit. It is then easy to increase the size of this hole with a larger drill bit, usually a 6.5mm or 7mm drill bit would be about right for the size of screw that''s used to fix a curtain rail.
When you''re screwing the rail on tighten the screws firmly & then turn the screwdriver back about a quarter of a turn, if the screws are too tight over time the compression will crack the tile.
Hope this helps.

PS- if your electric drill has a hammer setting please ensure this is NOT engaged when drilling through tiles.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy

...but you might need the ''hammer'' bit when you have gone through the tiles and then need to go through the concrete/bricks a bit....

You are right - you cannot simply put in picture hooks - everything has to be drilled through the concrete....even I can manage it - so I''m sure you can too Clarborough..!!   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Its great fun trying to put things up in Club Patara properties with the stone walls!  ;D >:D

It was a full day job for me to put up a new shower rail inside and "villa number" sign outside!

Instead of using picture hooks, we use those white hook things, I can''t remember what they''re called but you can get a pack of 6 or 10 in the pound stores or Wilkinsons, they have 4 small nails in each and you just hammer them into the walls. They seem to work on any wall, even walls you can''t drill into and only take seconds to put in place. Obviously no good for tiles.

Ceramic flooring is an attractive and hard wearing surface ideally suited to an installation in bathrooms and kitchens. Knowing how to lay ceramic tile is not too difficult.
