I really do not like giving money and it was only going to be a token present originally, something English that could not be bought out here. A Turkish friend suggested a toaster as he said they do not have them in his village.

I think as it seems to be getting complicated  they could end up with money or vouchers. I have also been invited to a wedding in Cappadicia in August where our friends son is getting mrried but will come back here to live, so that will be easier in regards to presents. Not sure if we can manage to get out there for the wedding, it will be too hot for me and no AC where they live!

Would be interesting to know if that is correct about electrical items being taken out.

That sounds like a posh toaster and marmalade! Will have to look in Lidls.

Seriously was the toaster bought out there?

BarbH - forget the toaster. I should buy them a Lambo Gallardo Spyder. That way you can drive their present over. No need to worry about being overweight ;) (Nice trolling)
