HELP KAPSA HELP KALKAN
« on: December 06, 2008, 03:06:57 PM »
Hi everyone,
I would like to share with you an email that has been sent to all Kapsa members by the management committee regarding the number of street animals in Kalkan. The reason for posting this on EK is that it occurred to us that as this is a subject that effects everyone, either living in or visiting Kalkan, there may be people who although not members of Kapsa may like to help us in our efforts. So please have a read and see what you think. Thank you;

Dear animal loving Kapsa Members,

We are sending this email in the hope that you will be able to aid  us in our  neutering programme. This letter is for those of you who are residing in Kalkan this winter.

During operations on the 19th of October and 9th of November 19 dogs and 50 cats were neutered; 25 males and 44 females. Since the establishment of the new veterinary clinic in Kalkan we have been able to operate on a daily basis and another 15 animals have been neutered in the last 10 days. As you can see from the numbers, our first priority is female animals. This is because now is the time that many females come into season. Had the 14 bitches that we have had neutered so far this winter become pregnant, and if each one had given birth to 7 puppies (which is the average) this would mean a total of 100 new  puppies on the streets of Kalkan in the next few months. When these grew up they too  would have had to be rounded up for neutering. This would have put a great strain on Kapsa resources and there is no guarantee that we would catch them all before they too started to reproduce.

The number of street dogs in Kalkan has never been as high as it is now. Given the understandable number of complaints from people living in Kalkan, we have to concentrate on bitches first to stop the number of dogs in the streets getting any higher. But, how are we going to find them? How many are there? Instead of us wandering around looking for fertile bitches, we have decided to ask you for your help. Could you please check the dogs in your area and call us if there are any not already neutered, especially bitches. If we find 10 bitches, we shall prevent a potential 70 unwanted puppies being born. It is sometimes difficult to tell whether a bitch has been neutered or not, because although neutered some of them do not have an ear tag. Even if you have doubts, please call us anyway.
If you find that there are no unneutered street dogs in your area, that information will be of value to us too. Such information could help us to make an inventory work plan for the future. So keep your eyes open.

Meanwhile, we have been informed that a bitch has had 10 puppies at the side of the bus station. They are being cared for by an animal lover at present but only on a temporary basis. The actual owner of the bitch said she had been given to somebody in Yeşilköy, but had been returned after becoming pregnant. Had she been neutered as soon as she was of a suitable age this could so easily have been avoided, now we have another 10 unwanted dogs in kalkan.

Kalkan Municipality had promised to pay all neutering and treatment costs incurred by Kapsa starting from the end of October. However, we have since been informed that due to the fact that this wasn’t budgeted for in their 2008 budget, they will not be able to start payments until January 2009. For this reason, we sadly feel it may be necessary to spend some of the already limited money which was reserved for our winter feeding program on the neutering of any bitches we can find.

Many thanks and best regards.

On behalf of Kapsa Management Committee
