I Remember Kalkan - Revisited
« on: November 28, 2008, 09:13:44 PM »
I have been looking back at some of our older threads and found these gems hidden away and thought I would dust them off and put them back on display.
Thank you to John (Rototherm) and Cosetta for their original posts

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember Kalkan on a hot Summer''s week in June. Being thousands of miles away now, it seems like a dream.
The breathtaking view from our Terrace at Patara Prince overlooking the Bay and hills of Kalkan.
The Boats, small and large calling into the sheltered harbour, from the small ''Putt Putt'' Ferry boats to the huge luxury Yacht Midlandia.
The eerie sound of the Muslim call to prayer from the Mosque, echoing around the bay and reaching us at Patara.
The cats calling in to see us on our terrace, given freedom to roam, and flopping down on our marbled terrace exhausted with the heat and having a fur coat!
The flower petals skating acoss the marbled floor at the slightes hint of a breeze.
The busy bees around the purple flowers on our Olive Garden , and watching as night falls and the purple flowers close to rest for the night.
The two timid Lizards at the foot of our garden, scuttling down a steep wall at the slightest sound.
The view of Kalkan as the sun sets, with the Pastel coloured houses and Villas with terracotta roofs, tumbling down the hillside to the beautifull, calm Sea.
The faint sound of music wafting over to us as we sit on our Terrace in the Evening, and the flickering lights of the Restaurants and Cafe''s as dusk falls.
The friendly people of Kalkan, who cannot do enough for you, the lovely food and wines and many diverse shops.
Yes, I remember Kalkan, and will live the dream again.
John

AND FROM COSETTA

As we wax lyrical ...

Kalkan, June 10, 1998                      Unfinished

It is 2am. The silence awakened me and beckoned me to the terrace.  I am beguiled ... enchanted.  A moonbeam blazes a silvery path across the still, inky blue bay.   The Big Dipper and millions of unknown stars embrace the sleeping silence.  Hanging low over the shimmering water, the man in the full moon sits on the peak of the opposite hill guarding the entrance to the horseshoe bay.  He is smiling at me. He beckons me. I can almost reach out and touch him.  The water shimmers under his watchful eye, but doesn’t make a ripple.

Kalkan village, only a few hours earlier bustling with diners in the portside and rooftop restaurants now sleeps under the protection of its star blanket. The gulets snuggle together in the tiny harbor awaiting the dawn.  Only two lights twinkle like a lovely little Christmas tree. In the early evening, a large 2-masted sailboat flying a British flag entered the bay.  Too big for the tiny harbor, it had to dock in the middle of the bay.  Its hulk is now etched in moonbeams. The mast lights mark its eery presence on the water. Time is momentarily suspended.  Serenity and beauty reign supreme.  There is nothing beyond this bay.  An enclave of peace and harmony in a world of bustle and chaos.

Hours pass and the dawn brings new stirrings.  Our breakfast companions, the Sparrows, come and sit in the rings of the balcony railing and begin their morning chatter.  They know I’m not going to encourage them, yet they beg incessantly - every morning without fail.  Whenever he’s gotten some tidbit from somewhere, Mr. Sparrow walks right up to me with his beakfull …as if to boast of his catch or to reprimand me for not feeding him.  Then off to his rooftop nest he flies.

It is almost noon now. Where the moon hung last night, there is now a small sailboat lazily slipping toward the open sea.  Another perfect day.  The Mediterranean sun playfully chases reflections across the azur sea.  The water is translucent.  Sea green, emerald green, azur blue, cobalt. The different depths are visible even from this terrace over the sea. I am looking out at the rocky yet verdant mountains ringing the other side of the bay.   They lace the shore as waves break on sand, forming four successively smaller inlets.  In the curve of the horseshoe, Kalkan hugs the shores and sprawls for a way up the hillside behind it.  That is where we will live someday.  Where peace and beauty reign.

Kalkan''s small marina is nearly empty.  Most of the boats have gone to the islands or to KaputaÅŸ beach for the day.  My gaze follows the shoreline along an empty expanse of rocky terrain and olive trees dotting the mountainside separating Kalkan and Club Patara.  Club Patara was named after the ancient Lycian city of Patara now being excavated 12 km to the west.  This side of the horseshoe bay hosts a luxury resort where profusions of bougainvilla, lilacs, lilies, pink and red geraniums and gorgeous yellow blossoms cascade down the mountainside, lining every road, embracing every villa.   Villas standing on the ruins of the first democracy, the Lycian civilization, which reached its peak in 100A.D.

2pm.  The call to prayer resounds from the mosque across the bay.  The 2nd mosque begins its chant in chorus. It is a melodic reminder of the Creator.

Sounds absolutely idylic and I'm sure it was. Unfortunately, these days, you should add the constant sounds of young girls and prostitutes working in the apartments all around yours and the regular convoys of motorbikes, trucks and cars being used all night and day to hide the noises.
It's so sad that such a beautiful place is being ruined by unscrupulous gangs of sex traffickers.

As I believe the young people say in their text messages - WTF!!!!

At least now we know why there is traffic in Kalkan and should perhaps be grateful.  Perhaps those piledrivers preparing the new D400 were just to drown out other noises too.....

Seriously though, what brought on such a stunningly negative (1st) post?

They've either confused the location or I've lost my powers of observation. Must look out and listen for the working girls!

this has been eluded to before...but it was in relation to a bit of pole dancing in Pacha and Russians, as I recall. Certainly not the full-scale sex trade lenandliz is referring to....WTF is right, Nick!  :o :o
This is Enjoy Kalkan, not Enjoy Bangkok..lenandliz, please elaborate on your post :-\
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

:)  Must admit that I saw lots of pretty young girls when I was across last week, but they seemed to be enjoying a post exam break (mind you with the shoes that a couple of them were wearing they might end up with another break altogether) ...maybe its just me who is getting old and the whole Kalkan Red Light thing only kicks in when I am long gone to bed, I need to stay up later to see what this is all about....

The Russians at Pasha bar were dancers,no pole dancing involved, they danced on tables in their skimpies,it was a rave/techno party night,I have seen the photos and they were very nice indeed, and I have it on good advice that they were not pro,s.
Re the post that started all of this, looks like the WUMS are back, either that or they stayed in Salford and not Kalkan !

Too true Babs, but more and more recently people are joining up,posting a stupid post, then sitting back and seeing what/who it winds up,then never to be heard of again,I doubt if any of them have been to Kalkan as most of the info the come up with can be found in the search.
It just goes to show how big EK has become, anyone who has been to Kalkan will know MOST of these posts are a load of **** !

Neil, you do make me larf....scantily dressed ladies dancing on tables are pole dancers, without the pole ;D ;D ;D .
I think the thread last year went from these charming ladies to "escorts"...how the link was made, I don't know ::) I'm sure they were lovely girls, but it did provoke a lot of.."what is Kalkan coming to...?" posts and not a WUM in sight :-\
BTW when did "trolling" become WUM? I need to get down with the kids and keep up to date with all this social networking mularchy :)

HaHa,scantily dressed ladies dancing on tables, pole dancers ? in Bury they are the punters  :o   ;D  If some people find young ? people, dressing how they want to "bringing a place down" maybe they should think about what they were like when they were younger and what the "oldies" thought about them,or get out a bit more !
Trolling? isnt that a sport in Norway ?
oops sorry K4E,no wum,its just me,not into all this IT speak, say it as it is,I say.  :P >:D
