First visited Kalkan in 2001.  Have stayed in many resorts in SW Turkey - Turunc, Gocek, Turgetreis, Side, Bodrum, Dalyan (3 years ago - did particularly like Dalyan, apart from the daytrippers) but we were so impressed with Kalkan so we returned in June this year (we don''t usually go back to the same place).  Boy has it changed! Was expecting this as nothing stays the same, especially after 7 years, but coming in on the top road I couldn''t believe how much it had sprawled and GROWN!! Old village hasn''t changed much, thank God, but have they gone too far with the rest of the development?  We stayed in a beautiful villa (Mehtapli) to one side of the hideous green school (but view not blighted by it) overlooking the bay and an olive grove, which I hope for the owner''s sake (and Kalkan''s) is never built on.

Has Kalkan got too big?  Sadly, although I love Turkey and its people, I''m not sure I''ll return to Kalkan.   OK at at least it''s not Marmaris (driving through there was enough for me! Anywhere with traffic lights and a McDonalds is a no go zone to me and I think someone would have to pay me megabucks to stay there!). I love Turkey and I can understand resorts being developed help the local economy but I still feel sad.  How do others feel about the changes?

Kalkan is a victim of it''s own charm and beauty..yes it''s changed but not the heart of the village like you say..the people are still there year after year greeting you as warmly as ever..for me ..i go no where else ;)
People Of Britain.. When your missus asks "Does my bum look big in this? Never say "Dunno your blocking the light."... just sayin ????

Agree with Blue Lizard but, feel it is mainly down to lack of proper enforced planning regulations. Whether this is due to a corrupted officialdom, I don''t know.
It never ceases to amaze me that the policy of not being able to build on more that 15% of a plot can be sidestepped by some, simply by using the overall parcel size rather than the individual plot size. So they but 1200 sq metres of land and divide it into 4 plots. Logic for me, suggests that the building on each plot should be no more than 15% of 300 sq metres. i.e. 45 sq metres, thus ensuring a healthy balance of building and garden. However, in practice what they allow is 15% of 1200 sq metres or 180 sq metres for each building which makes for the mess of beton we have now.
There - over there, there are.            To - Going to
Their - belongs to them.                     Too - In addition, Also
They're - Short for they are.

Pedant! me?

Negatives:- Over built, very little green areas left, power and water cuts through over burdened utility services.
Positives:- Lovely people, fantastic views, great weather, Kalkan charm and we all do one thing sorry two.
1) fall in love with Kalkan 2) keep going back. What a place mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
