Bodrum to Kalkan - I need help :)
« on: August 14, 2008, 04:13:15 PM »
Hi all!   ???

Going to Bodrum to visit a friend in mid October - then thinking of combining being in Turkey and heading to Kalkan to see another.... any one got any ideas the best way to get from Bodrum to Kalkan? (And that''s reasonable for a lone traveller?) I can''t seem to find a website that is helpful!

Thanks :)

Its very easy to get from Bodrum to Kalkan. Go to the bus station in the centre of Bodrum, you can get the Big Pamukkale bus direct to Fethiye which last year cost 25ytl, change at Fethiye and it will cost another 10ytl to kalkan. The total journey takes 6-7 hours but the buses are very comfortable. You are normally given hot or cold drinks, cake or biscuits and sometimes even ice cream! If you are returning to Bodrum you go from Kalkan direct to Mugla and change there for Bodrum.

Another point which is worth mentioning for lone travellers because it is not widely known, is that on the inter-city buses, single travellers are always seated next to someone of the same sex. So a woman travelling alone is never seated next to a man and vice versa.  All seats are reserved and by some miracle, no matter how crowded the bus, the system always works.

On the large buses you have a reclining seat, more leg room than on a charter flight and very helpful attendants, who as mel says, keep you supplied with cold drinks and snacks, all included in the ticket price.

The only piece of advice is when booking , never select a seat in the front or back rows, both have much less leg room.

Actually Lantana I knew someone who was refused the last seat (despite their being a spare seat) as it would have meant she would have ben sat next to a man.

Mel- I love ice cream but have never been served it on a bus, mind you I usually travel in winter. I did have Cubuk Corba (cup-a-soup) once though.

wow - that sounds really good - all this on a bus! thanks guys.

so you reckon it''s quite a safe trip to make? What type of times do they run? is there an online timetable and stuff?

have you done these journeys? trying to work out which way round would be best to do it - i fear it may e cheaper on flights to fly into/from the same airport each time, but i haven''t researched this enough yet. Have you?

Thanks so much, sorry for all the questions!!!

Have not done the Bodrum trip this year, last year did it several times and met some very interesting turkish ladies on the bus and managed to have conversations with them even with my very limited Turkish.

Last year departures from Bodrum on the big Pamukkale bus were about 0900 and 12.30 or 1300. I always travelled on the lunchtime service which got into Fethiye about 1730 then I got the 1830 bus to kalkan. From Kalkan to Bodrum the bus leaves at 0945 getting into Mugla about 1430 where there are plenty of buses into Bodrum. You arrive in Bodrum about 1700.

Timetables do change so I always check especially the times of the last bus back as I would hate to be stranded anywhere overnight.

There are obviously many more bus companies at Fethiye and Bodrum but I personally found the times of the Pamukkale bus to be most convienent for me. The buses also make several short stops as there are no toilet facilities on the bus itself.
