Kalkan Desert Island Discs
« on: August 09, 2008, 11:37:55 AM »
For a touch of well needed frivolity I thought I would start a "Desert Island Disc"type thread -  You know the idea - You imagine you are castaway on a desert island. You can choose 8 records, 1 luxury item & 1 book to take with you. You already have the Bible and the Full works of Shakespeare with you.

To reflect the changes in modern technology you can take your i-pod, MP3/4 player. You have a choice of 8 favourite tracks, a book, a favourite film/movie and a luxury item.
So what would you pick and why?

Joan

:D Well Joan,to further our chat of the other evening,I would have to take four  tracks of my favourite "wrinkly" (I think that ''s how you described him),Willie Nelson.Any four ,but "Slow down old World" may be a good one to take.Four of John Denver ,one of which must be "The Higher we Fly."
Book would be "An Evil Cradling" by Brian Keenan, film will definitely be "Camelot" ,and my luxury item will have to be photos of my Grandson Jamie.
Reasons why .......... I have spent the best time ever over many years going to concerts of Willie Nelson and John Denver, and memories are always something no body can take, spoil ,or change. That will keep me sane during the Loneliness. Also, very relaxing in case I am the least bit nervous of spiders and snakes and the like !!!!!The book speaks for itself,I used it during studies that I did whilst working, and each time I read it I see and understand new things about Human life.Film,I love musicals, and that other old wrinkly,Richard Harris !!!!!!!
Photographs of Jamie will sustain me,and remind me to enjoy the peace for a while.!!!!

Nice one Chris, cannot deny Willie Nelson has a great voice.
I am still working on my list, I keep remembering another song and then have to decide which one to cross off , grrrrh.
Will have to be strict with myself.

Good choices Wendy, I would tend to go for Itchycoo Park rather than Hole in my shoe, and I''''m not sure a hubby is classed as a luxury!!!!
Nothing by the Police, Wendy? ;D

Come on you lot, put your thinking caps on

all of the songs sound great.
sorry to be an old hippy but Leonard Cohen songs would also be on my list.
I have in fact booked tickets at the O2 arena for November to see him (Jeff''s surprise birthday present) We met and realised we were meant to be together 25 years ago because of  our love for LC.

My choice

1  "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" by Freddie Cannon
This was one of the first records we played on my mum''s pride and joy, her Stereogram. She had saved up for weeks for it. It had a stereo deck, radio and a cocktail cabinet all built in.
I have know idea where the record came from, but when ever I hear this song, I get a big smile on my face and have to sing and dance aong to it.

2 "You''ve Lost that Lovin'' Feeling" The Righteous Brothers
A classic, no more to say

3 "Jamming" Bob Marley and the Wailers
My hubby''s favourite and he always plays his Bob Marley tracks when we are in Kalkan

4 "Maneater" Hall and Oates
Spoilt for choice with this duo but picked this one

5 "Sky" Sonique
Great lyrics and feel-good song

6 "Can''t Get You Outta My Head" Kylie
My favourite star. Again, I was really stuck for which one to choose. Picked this as it reminds me of a trip we took to Rhodes to surprise our son, who was working there, for his Birthday. This had just come out and we had a brilliant night out in Lindos. We danced on the bar in a club to this one.  Also, the first song my grand daughter tried to sing along too.

7 "Your Love is King" Sade
Always reminds me of holidays and lazy days on the beach.

8 "Slip Into Something More Comfortable" Kinobe
Ultimate Chill Out  music - night sky, stars, lapping waves, cooling down, thinking of bed

Film "Mamma Mia" get to listen to Abba music as well.

Book A very large Photoalbum

Luxury Item - one of those wind up torch/radio/Beacon gadgets, practical and hey I maybe able to pick up a radio station or two.

Joan

This was harder than it looks! Here goes -

Wonder of You - Elvis (first single)

Ride a White Swan - TRex (first album)

Hold Me Close - David Essex (Sung to me (well first two lines anyway) by him with his arm round me at the signing of his autobiography at WHS a few years ago) ;D

Le Freak - Chic

Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty - (reminds me every time I hear it of the last few weeks of my last year at school, sitting listening to the radio at lunchtime in the blazing heat that used to be the British summer!)

In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins (sounds amazing live)

Dance Away - Roxy Music

Ave Maria - Andrea Bocelli

Book - Anything by Barbara Erskine

Film - The Green Mile by Stephen King staring with Tom Hanks

Luxury Item - Family photo album

Good film choice, Yoyo.
It is really hard just to pick 8 songs. I kept coming up with more and crossing out and changing. In the end I tried to choose some to reflect different memories and moods, rather than my all-time favourites. Trouble is I now want to change my post, cos I keep hearing and remembering more songs!!
Thanks for posting

Here goes...this was harder than completing a dissertation, Joan  :)

1. Stop Look Listen (to your heart) - Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross
2. That''s Entertainment - The Jam
3. Mack the Knife - Bobby Darrin
4. Clair de Lune (from Suite Bergamasque) - Debussy
5. Fast Love - George Michael
6. Miss Sarajevo - U2 featuring Pavorotti
7. Someone Like You - Van Morrison
8. Rhapsody in Blue - George Gershwin

All because I absolutely love them as pieces of music - simple as that - but sooohhh difficult to just chose 8!

book - Love Letters from Great Men and Women - From the 18th Century to Present Day by CH Charles
(a bit of a romantic at heart... :-[)

film - Terms of Endearment - sometimes I like a film that makes me laugh, sometimes one that makes me
        cry and this does both.

luxury item - a blow up dingy with outboard motor - I can only do isolation for so long
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Thanks Neil,
your list really rocks.
Re your book choice, one of my colleagues is a JP and visited a prison as part of her induction. She saw him being closely supervised in the exercise area and the guards gave her a "potted history" of him. Sounds like he is a complete psycho, but he did wave to her and shouted a suggestion to her, that she thought might be a physical impossibility. She did comment on his superb physique !!! LOL
Might I suggest a crate of limes maybe slightly more practical than a bike?

Hiya Joan,he doesnt seem to have done anything really nasty outside prison I dont think he can handle
outside life as he has been inside from his teens, but when he is in prison he doesnt like people who have
commited sex crimes and "has a go" at them, and if he cant get a cup of tea and pencil and paper he goes off on one,and he did hold the world record for press ups,not sure if it still stands.

Shine on you crazy diamond: Pink Floyd
Gloria : Van Morrison & John Lee Hooker
Home  : Michael Buble
Telegraph road (album version): Dire Straits
It’s all over now baby blue: Them

Book: -   Just about anything by Steven King

That has to be the best line ever but delivered by Jack Nicholson? …...PRICELESS!

Luxury Item? . . . . a broken alarm clock!

That was fun! . . . . picking 8 tracks out of the thousands? . . . . almost impossible when you love music ranging from Classical to modern Dance
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
