Travellers Cheques
« on: July 17, 2008, 11:31:21 AM »
Hello
I wondered if you could give me any tips about changing travellers cheques. Last time I was in Kalkan (2 years ago) the post office refused to take our travellers cheques (I think they were either sterling or thomas cook) so we used the shops to change cheques for money.
Would anyone know which types of travellers cheque the post office accepts?
I am coming out next Monday (21st July) and would appreciate a quick response if poss!
Many thanks
Susan

We had the same problem in Kas 5 years ago now we take a Nationwide flexi card which has no charges and the rest in sterling and change at the post office which gives quite a good rate. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the swift response. I will mull it over. Am always a bit reluctant to take a lot of sterling with me.
My dad was in Kalkan last year so I''ll check what he did.

yes the nationwide flex account is good...we were getting more than the local shops were giving on exchange and as Jacquiviva says ..there is no charge..this is our 3rd year using this account and we just pay money in for Kalkan use only....no more travellers cheques or carting your passport round..it''s loads easier....Kalkan now has plenty of atm''s ;)

I still take travellers cheques with me and although the post office no longer takes them I have found it no problem changing them - I have mainly used Infinity Jewellers or Abi Travel, though I am sure there must be others (I think the Merkez Cafe will also change small amounts).  American Express cheques appear the most widely accepted ones (I heard a couple of years ago, before the post office stopped changing them altogether, that they had refused to take Thomas Cook ones!).

By the way, if anyone wants to take a credit card with them for those unexpected purchases the post office over here has started one that charges no commission on purchases made abroad.
