VFM......still good
« on: July 29, 2016, 10:34:20 PM »
Just got the credit card bill after our July visit. I won't bore you with the details but.....
Meal for 6:
3 X shared starters, 6 X steaks, several beers, 1 X bottle house red, soft drinks & water, possibly a couple of glasses of white, 1 X dessert.

TL 641 @ 3.89 = £165. That's £27.50 a head.

That was Musakka. Cannot wait until Sept when hopefully the fx will be better.

Enjoy Kalkan!

Me & oh went for a meal last Friday to a local restaurant in Tadworth (Surrey) where we live. Nothing to fancy but quite a nice place.....2 starters, 2 main meals & 2 bottles of house white hic hic......£100

It makes my blood boil when people say Kalkan is or is getting expensive :-(((
Latest weather report...... Large outbreaks of Efes followed by intermitent spells of vodka and tonic ;-))

For my birthday a couple of weeks ago we went, last minute to our local ask, we had 2 shared starters, 4 main meals, 2 puds, 2 beers and 2 soft drinks....we had a 25% off voucher and it still cost £100....it really took the edge of it for me.  Its chain resteraunt food, not gourmet cooking...to be fair we coukd have eaten at Gourmet for about the same money.  No guessing which I would have preferred!

Due to daughters friends parent's concerns about safety in Turkey we have had to abandon plans for a week in Kalkan later this month and have booked a villa in Crete instead. Not only was the villa £800 more for the week in question but I've just been looking at boat trips  - 800 euros for a 6 hour boat trip but hey free water and fruit included  :o.
So ... VFM still good!
We are aiming to travel without kids (and their friends) in September so all is not lost.

I'd have left the daughter's friend at home. Kalkan is just as peaceful as ever.

Be great to read a report on your holiday to Crete & how it compares with Kalkan & VFM villa comparison ?

OneLove - Ok will do, I doubt it would be as entertaining as many on here but will certainly report back on meals, costs and general vibe. The silver lining on the change of plans is that we get to sample another destination with the family ..... and we will still visit Kalkan in September.

Ok so here goes with my brief price comparison for our family trip to Crete:
1) flight £350 about the same as kalkan last July as I recall
2) Villa - £1900, £800 more than I was quoted for a 5 bed villa in easy walking distance of Kalkan
3) Transfers - 280 Euros for a minivan for 7 ( bit miffed as I was quote 140 only to find out too late that was each way!)
4) Drinks - similar, perhaps even a little cheaper
5) Meals out - this was the biggest difference both in terms of cost, quality and service. We very much felt like they couldn't wait to get the food out, eaten and us cleared away. On our last evening we were fleeced at a harbour side restaurant and charged about 100 euros for a seafood platter for two, much of which was of very poor quality. In total we paid 280 Euros for 7 main courses a bottle of average wine, a few beers and soft drinks - oh and 2 coffees  >:( :(
So yes - Kalkan is still very good value for money. We wouldn't go to Crete again and we are back in Kalkan in 2 weeks  ;D

2  starters  = seafood chowder,   2 mains = fillet steaks with all l the trimmings , 2 deserts = lemon drizzle cake ,  2 bottles Kankaya white & two  EFES beers  , 2 X fresh bean coffees  ,    fantastic  views over Kalkan  bay   all for the princely sum  of  85 trl   :::::

 location =  villa roof terrace   in Kiziltas     and  we ill be there in 2 weeks  eating similar every other evening  and like many other  alternating with a trip in to the village to a different restaurant every other night , with lashing of people watching   and total chilling  thrown in   : yeeeeeeeeeeee  haaaaaaaaaaa  ;

brian j p, please can I come for my tea if we happen to be in Kalkan at the same time next year?  ;D sounds amazing!

AlisonD,  - scary Greek prices, hope you've got some spending money left to enjoy Kalkan.

Hope you both have good holidays, lucky you two, back again soon.  :) 8)
