Kalkan town beach
« on: February 07, 2016, 02:22:49 PM »
It seems that every time there is a storm, the stones on the beach disappear, leaving a sandy beach.
This started me wondering if the beach is artificial i.e. were the stones originally put there by the Beledere
If they were removed, would the beach revert to a sandy one?  Any thoughts?

We live by a beach in Cornwall and it changes with the tides and weather...yesterday was covered in big stones and today lovely and sandy! I presume without the tide changes in the Med the beach only changes in extreme conditions!

If you look at old photos of Kalkan there is no beach where the beach is now...so suggests man-made beach.
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Sounds just like home...

We are about as far from the coast as you can get in the UK, and there is a sign on outside of the Centre saying "To the Beach"!

It's a man-made one in a park every summer.  Very perplexing for our overseas visitors.....

Wonder if it's part of the reason we feel connected with Kalkan?  But then again,  we're not 'beach' people, so that may have something to do with the other attractions!

I was told that the Kalkan beach is man-made, not natural.

The beach is man made and when some of the stones get washed away we are not left with beautiful sand but horrible gritty stuff. Each spring a load of new stones is brought down and it all starts again.Patara isnt far though and has the most beautiful, sandy beach in Turkey!

Yea BL

My better half,Lady Penelope and me " Parker " fit the image you conjour up very well.......attempting to get  into the sea ( not very gracefully,i might add ), and then, trying to get back out again....well,it looks like our puppet strings have been completely cut through........and that's with us wearing water shoes !!........no hope of looking anything other than totally ridiculous!

The locals have it down to a fine art...barefoot, I might add :o
We love the Town Beach for all it's faults - looking forward to seeing the "improvements" in exactly 99 days time.
Kaputas is also close and also beautiful but slightly coarser sand than Patara - but its a real beach :)

I know that Kalkan beach is man made but man made things can adapt to nature laws especially near the sea or ocean. It can only depend on time
