Paprika for me; to be honest, I haven''t had a chance to miss it yet but only recently heard it has closed down so I will miss it when out to Kalkan next in June as it was invariably, at least as far as I was concerned, the restaurant not to miss out.  Loved the atmosphere down there particularly on Jazz night.      Bill

The Albatros, good food at reasonable prices, usually a welcome breeze and a nice sitting area for a drink before and after your meal and the good company.

Oh yes, the Albatros.
The very first place we had a meal on our very first trip to Kalkan.
At the time it was owned by an English couple who went out of their way to make their customers feel comfortable.
We asked for something on the menu and they realised they had run out of it, so they sent the waiter off on his scooter to find some rather than tell us it wasn''''t available!
We always made it our first night meal when we arrived in Kalkan, and it made us feel we had ''''arrived''''!  :)

I too am agreeing with BL and Loretta.  Zeyno was a great cook and a really lovely lady.  She put so much work into moving to the new place and I''m very disappointed for her that it didn''t work out.

Perhaps it was too pandering to English tastes - we never were persuaded to eat there when viewing her menu. rather walk along the street and eat at Zeki''s.

Sorry Alfaman did you not once say of Zeki''s "They don''t need to with their sticky toffee pudding, a great change from Baclava!" - is that not pandering to English tastes?? And not forgetting the old Cafe Set''s "cup of Liptons".  By the way - I''m not English!

Yep we miss Zeynos too, but though the food may have looked too English, she put her own slant on the way it was presented and always wanted to please her guests.  She has remained a great friend and we recently spent time with her and her family in Istanbul. We met 12 years ago when Kalkan was a small village and before we bought out there but every time we went back, Zeyno was always our good friend.  And will remain so.

When you live permanently in the village you know rather more about the restaurant owners than just how they appear when you visit their restaurant.  So for example, we know that Zeki''s is owned by people with a wonderful reputation not just for their food but for their integrity, honesty and trustworthyness. Conversely, Zeyno''s owners had a history of bad debts and deception. An Englishwoman who was a  great friend to the restaurant for years was relieved of her life savings by them and died in near destitution last year. They left Kalkan with no warning leaving a trail of bad debts behind them.

In Kalkan, appearances can be very deceptive.

Sorry folks didn''t mean to set things stirring here but was purely reacting to a comment that a certain restaurant panders to English tastes, when probably most of the restaurants in Kalkan do.  And for information I enjoy/enjoyed eating in both restaurants.

One of the good things about Kalkan is that there is such a range of eating choices. Everyone can find something they like to eat in the town be that plain, familiar or more adventurous food at a variety of prices. As there are so many eating places those that don''t offer what people who live there and visitors want don''t survive - The Indian restaurant had gone before I got back to Kalkan!!!!!!!!!!

Touché, Lantana.  That lady who was deprived of her house and her wealth, then died, is a tragic example of misplaced trust.  Her story should be a warning to all. Unfortunately, she isn''t the only victim, and the lesson should always be ''buyer beware''.  Do your homework, do the legal work, don''t accept verbal promises.

for me the best place was tango when it was in the rickety building behind what is now ibos. that had the first ''fab toilet'' in town.

I agree, Tango was absolutely the best. Wonderful food, great atmosphere and views and an astonishing selection of music. We found it quite by chance one afternoon wandering the back streets, we could hear La Boheme in the distance and followed the sounds. We were invited in for coffee and stayed for three hours listening to opera. It was on the roof top in Tango that we decided we wanted to live here and made our decision to buy. The roof top bar at the Oasis with their wonderful jazz and Tango were the deciding factors.
Despite being so much smaller, Kalkan was much more eclectic then.

Aaah Lantana, the roof top bar at the Oasis. What wonderful memories that evokes. Just sitting up there with a G&T listening to the mellow jazz was simply a joy. Plus Pamir and Tumay were such a lovely couple. I really miss the old Oasis.
