Exchange Rate
« on: August 24, 2013, 10:16:12 AM »
Hi
For all you who are lucky enough to be in Kalkan at the minute, what's the best exchange rate there?
I've just looked at Travel FX and can get TL 3.03 delivered with no fee attached.
We are coming back out at the end of September and don't know if we should exchange now or wait a bit longer.

Thanks

Hi Hodstar,

Although i usually recommend waiting until you get to Kalkan, the rate is higher at present than it has been for years and if you can get 3.03 tl to £ 1.00 i would definetly get it.The end of september is still a few weeks off and the rate can change quite a bit in that time.

It may go a bit higher but my own thought is that it will drop a little. You will always get the best rate of the day by going to the banks in kalkan, but when you go in september, the best rate of the day may only be 2.95 tl............or maybe it could be 3.50 tl ( wow !! if it is )...it is a guessing game isn't it but i would get 3.03,if i was you.

Did you order Hodstar? I see tonight that the TL has moved down even further against the pound to 3.10680 on the markets, so you should get even more for your money.

Research over the last few days on the Turkish Lira fall against STG suggests that Turkeys proximity to the potential escalation of the Syria conflict is unsettling the money markets.

The rate shown on Deniz bank site shows almost 3.2, I'm wondering where this will stop, it is obviously great news for holiday makers but will there be repercussions? Will the government attempt to stem the devaluation of the Lira, and if so what will be the ultimate consequences for people with savings in Turkish banks be?
I just have this feeling that somewhere along the line there has to be drawbacks to taking advantage of high exchange rates, or am I just being pessimistic?

When the current rate is 3.22, 3 doesn't seem very competitive. With the current unrest in the area I can't see it dropping back any time soon. We normally get a good exchange rate in a jewellery shop in Dalaman centre before we make our way to Kalkan although it probably doesn't make much difference than going to the banks.

From former trips to Kalkan the PTT did give a better rate but I cant remember if there was commission taken off that rate making it similar to the street exchange ?

Not sure what they call it but you always pay a fee when you exchange @ the PTT.

How can you get 3.30 when the exchange rate is 3.20 at the moment? Seems odd.
