Groceries - a quick Turkish lesson please.
« on: August 06, 2013, 09:04:57 AM »
Morning everyone! Three more sleeps!  :)

Instead of me wondering around the super market aimlessly on my first morning can anyone please advise me of the Turkish for fresh semi skimmed milk, natural yogurt and a decent orange squash.

Did do a search under milk, but some posts were quite old and it sounded like fresh milk wasn't that easy to get?

Oh and proper butter. In fact  if anyone wants to share their knowledge of the Turkish language regarding basic groceries and pleasantries e.g hello, goodbye, please and thank you, I for one and I'm sure others would appreciate it.
Sorry if some of this has been covered, but it's good to have it all on one post.

Thanks

Don't worry too much dairy things tend to have a picture of a cow on the packet /carton, you can get fresh milk but it doesn't tend to keep for long. we use the long life type .Yali supermarket has most things and may be the easiest option for you,you can always ask the assistants too..if you go back to the main page(top of this page r/h side will take you there) you will see a list ..click onto   Talking Turkish   ..you will find basic words on there....if you are stuck a nod and a smile still works  ;)
the butter we buy is in a siver foil with green writing on..very nice, but cant remember brand name...also if you have a smart phone you can download a language app, make sure you pick a free one as you only want basics..it's good for practicing with .

Hi Suzyq1, fresh milk is now clearly labelled in Yali (not sure about any other supermarkets) and you'll find it in the big long fridge with all the cheese, yogurts etc with a sign in English above it :)

BL and Jenjen are right... Yali supermarket is probably the easiest place to shop as most of he assistants speak a fair bit of English and they do have some signs in English too. But they will appreciate it if you try and speak a few pleasantries in Turkish . Good on you for trying :)

Suzyq1 attempting to say a few words in Turkish is really appreciated by the locals.. Mrs Hobbo put together a little guide to Turkish with some useful words and phrases see: http://enjoykalkan.com/forum/index.php?topic=11246.0

Hi, if you do intend to give it a go when you are there in the shops (and people do appreciate it), it is worth listening to how the words sound (using an app or similar) before you go as many words they sound nothing like they are written (some letters are not sounded as they are in English particularly the ğ, like in tereyağı isn't sounded at all and neither is the ı.) If you say it and it sounds wrong, staff aren't being rude if they can't understand you, it's just that the words do sound so different. It's the same for us with English if foreign speakers put the emphasis on the wrong part of the word.
It's definitely worth giving it a go as it's great fun, but for your own confidence, it's best to listen to the word a couple of times before so you get some idea of the pronunciation. ;)

Does anyone know of a good app for an ipad.....preferably free.....then I can do a bit of learning as I'm ashamed to say that after 8 visits my Turkish is limited to merhaba!
Quite disgraceful really?  ::) ::)

I have registered with Babbel which seems to be working for me. Starts with basics and progresses as you go through the courses. Also makes you review what you have already learned. Includes words and grammar and speaks too so that you can hear the correct pronunciation.

Well my daughter and I have had fun today trying to get our heads, or should I say tongues,  around some of the basic words!

Hobbo, a gold star for Mrs Hobbo. The help with pronunciation is really useful.

To everyone else, a very big  teşekkürler. :)
