Wine.
« on: June 05, 2013, 08:09:21 AM »
Hi even though we spent a lovely two weeks, our first time, in Kalkan last May ive a memory like a sieve.  Can anyone recommend some decent wines. Particular Dry White, or a cava style.  We are partial occasionally to red and rose.

Many Thanks

Lancs Lass

Ps two more get ups  8) ;D ;D >:D

I like Sade, Kavak and Doluca white, at  the cheaper end of the market. The Sauvignon Blancs from Likya, Sevilen or Sarafin are excellent for more expensive stuff. I'd steer clear of Angora, which tastes like paint-stripper to me, although I know it has its fans.

I found a lot of the Turkish wines gave me indigestion but the kavak white seems to be ok and also the majestik - both dry whites and can even take the majestik rose. of the two I prefer the majestik and not at the expensive end either. it's also down to personal preference I guess.

After several years of trying I've given up on the fizz....sadly you won't find a decent one and will spend a fair amount of your "handbag fund" in the search.....forget wine with bubbles until you get home....or buy a couple of bottles in Duty Free on your way out.
Lal rose for us...cheapest is 19.50tl in Kippa. Also like the Iris Rose they sell in White Table and im a fan of the paint stripper AKA Angora....cheapest is the supermarket opposite the taxi rank 12.99tl.
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Sound advice re fizz. Back home I drink oceans of cava, but even the expensive fizz in Kalkan tastes raw, sweet and disappointing. Good tip re where to buy Lal - I have been paying 23TL in Yali. Re shop opposite taxi rank - it's called Lucky. I only know because I recently amassed an embarassingly large collection of their carrier bags gathered on late night forays to replenish stocks of Angora (white and red) in the Apartment.

Does anyone know if the supermarket along by the Harbour, near Define Tours sells white wine, and what sort of prices? Do they have a chiller?

Ooohhhh now there's a confession   both to the late night forays, is this so you cannot be seen? And to buying the dreaded paint stripper. Love it

I prefer red, so any advice re preferences and price would be apreciated. Mind you I am now thinking of-------- buying a box at duty free in order to take to the beach etc (red wine improves withbeing decanted) or does that make me sound like a lost cause lol

Jayne the harbour shop does sell wine but the prices are quite high and they didn't have a chiller last year.  We could bring some down from the top for you on the way down!!! Have you got a fridge in the room? C ::) ;D ;D ;D

Cankaya, Angora red and Lal all go down nicely...mind you everything seems to taste nice when we are in Kalkan!  ::)
Have never tried buying fizz while out there but love the champagne cocktails, kir royal etc in Trio and Kleo......mind you they are usually at the end of an evening drinking copious amounts of the above wine so maybe my judgement is a little clouded?!  >:D
