Google or Apple turn-by-turn navigation
« on: May 30, 2013, 08:39:22 AM »
Hi,

New to this forum and visiting Kalkan (and Turkey) for the first time in a few weeks time.

I have hired a car at Dalaman airport and would like to know if either Google or Apple turn-by-turn navigation, on the phone, works in Turkey?

Thank you in advance.

Hi and welcome.

They work BUT you will get hammered by data roaming charges and the maps will most probably out of date. We had guests who tried to navigate to Kalkan from Dalaman by google and they were sent on a weird route that took >3hrs.
The route from the airport is easy, good directions are available on KTLN see:

I have a very responsible position...

If you've got a TomTom with Europe mapping - take that.

Works perfectly... (providing your maps are up-to-date that is!  :) )  We have friends near Portakallik, up a track, and it gets us there within 200m (off the map) without any issues.

I have an old Garmin GPS but was trying to avoid spending £50 to get a map of Turkey.

I'll download the Google offline map of the area to my phone (GPS then works without a data connection) and use the directions as suggested.

Thanks.

It's an easy, straightforward drive to Kalkan.  As most of it is on the same road (D400) all the way, it is very difficult to go wrong if you follow the directions.

It seems daunting until you actually do it, but I definately wouldn't pay £50 to update your Garmin as you really wont need it.

Have a great time.
Currently have a duplex apartment in Kiziltas which we visit as often as we can.

I'd be really careful to make sure you turn off data roaming or the £50 to update your Garmin will seem cheap :o :o
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Hi we've got a really old Garmin too that really needs updated but it gets us about even in turkey!!! Sometimes were floating in the air but that's fun.
As others have said its really easy to navigate just remember to have some lire for the tunnel. Can't remember how much it is, I'm sure someone will let you know.

3.50Tl for the tunnel charge. You may also need money to exit the airport depending on where you pick up your car - usually around 10Tl. Very straightforward drive to Kalkan.

Just for readers that may not know - if you have a TomTom with Europe mapping, Turkey is included.

Map updates are 4 times a year and cost about £45 (but I haven't checked this year ...!).  And lets face it, you really need to know where the roads are in the UK don't you? (and that includes roundabouts, changed one-ways, revised motorway junctions, etc, etc).  you also get map sharing with submitted changes about 3 times a week if you update regularly.

Maybe a Garmin doesn't work out quite as cost-effective when you see the map updates.  Just a thought!
