WALKING IN KALKAN
« on: February 04, 2008, 06:33:58 PM »
Hello, me and my husband are going to Kalkan on good friday for a week and whilst i will be busy relaxing my husband is a keen walker and would like to do a couple of fairly challenging walks up the mountains. Can anyone suggest where to get maps and routes of 4-5 hour walks?

thanks in advance

Paula

The Lycian Way long distance footpath runs from near Fehtiye to Antalya and passes Kalkan.  It is very well sign-posted.  All details at www.lycianway.com.  Otherwise there don''t seem to be any Turkish equivalents of the OS maps - certainly not with the same level of detail or accuracy.  Unfortunately we will not be back in Kalkan till the end of April else would have loved to join in a bit of exploration of the nearby hills.  Have a great holiday.

Hi,
When we were there over New Year we went into the mountains to Gombe. There seemed to be quite a number using this a starting point to go up. Again someone mentioned historical sites close by. It was about 40 mins. by car.

The Lycian Way is absolutely the best bet. You can buy the book in the UK, it comes with good maps and your husband can choose walks which suit his requirements. Within 20 minutes of Kalkan there are at least a dozen great walks.  We have several informal walking groups in the village. We ourselves are not serious walkers, our limit is 3 hours but if you pm me just before you get here, I can find out what serious walks (5 hours or longer!!) are going on at that time. Your husband will be welcomed by the serious set, who take such feats of endurance in their stride(literally)

Hi Paula, there are a couple of articles about the Lycian Way and Walks in the Land of Lights Newspaper, which is a Fethiye paper. There is a link to it from the Main Home page, Links, Newspapers and also a link to an article on Lycia.
