Unmissable/unforgettable?
« on: January 26, 2008, 05:56:13 PM »
Thanks to everyone who welcomed me on the "Introduce yourself" thread.  This has to be the easiest to use and best run forum site I''ve ever come across (congrats to Mr Enjoy Kalkan).

The countdown to our first visit to Kalkan has begun...19 weeks to go.  The diet has started to make some room for the delish Turkish food and efes!  Why is it so easy to put on weight and so hard to take off even one ounce  ;D ?   Must have been the haggis we had last night to celebrate Burns Night...

As first timers we have some idea of what to expect, to see and to do, but know we''ll be spoilt for Choice.  So, what would you Kalkan regulars say are unmissable/unforgettable things to do and see in and around Kalkan?  Which tours are best?  If you could only go to one place (site or restaurant) which one would you choose and why?
It''d be good to hear your ideas, and we''ll try some of them out when we get there...can''t wait...

We will do our best to help you Rachey. Don''''t bother with Killer Heels, Kalkan has lots of cobbles and steep hills so make sure you pack some comfortable shoes. I would suggest you take a look back at some of the threads on this section, the "First timers to Kalkan" has some good ideas, a gulet trip is a wondeful day spent on the sea and the food they provide is good. A trip to Patara beach is a must, take plenty of sunscreen and make the time to have a wander around the archeological site there. The Thursday Market is also a must, and I always like a trip to Kas. I am sure you will get other suggestions. You will not regret your choice.

where to start?? I''ll have a bash at listing some of my favourite things but no doubt will forget some of them and others will have their own personal favourites.
In no particular order of preference ( I adore every one of them!)

Boat trip from the harbour
Saklikent Gorge
Sunken City Kekova. The home made ice cream in ? Simena is worth the trip alone.
Market day
Kalamar beach club.
People watching at the Merkez after dinner.
The lamb dishes in the Doy Doy
Lounging on the cushions at the Pancake place
Steak at the Alternatif Atlantis.
Pide anywhere!!!!!!!!!
A lazy day down at the public beach.
Sitting on the balcony with a large vodka and tonic watching the sun go down  ;D
The beautiful, friendly street animals.
Waking up every morning with the sun on your face and being so excited at the day ahead.
Lounging by the pool.
Good company both locals and fellow travellers.
The views  :) :)
Listening to the call to prayer from the Mosques.
The hours spent deliberating over which wonderful restaurant to eat in.
Shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really could go on and on and am sure that I''ve missed many wonderful things to do but one thing I am certain of is that whatever you decide to do you won''t be disappointed.

For me it would be swimming - Kalamar beach club & diving into that blue, blue, deep water.
A drink at the Cleo bar at the start of the evening.
A meal at Korsan Marina
An ajibadem (Turkish almond liquer) at the Mergez cafe to round off the evening
Waking up the next morning & knowing it''s all there again.

PS I want to be in Kalkan NOW!!!!!!

I think itstime pretty much covered all of my favourites but I do have to endorse the suggestion of the Kekova trip and the home made ice cream. I don''t think I have ever tasted ice cream like it! Gorgeous! Also the lazy day at sea, we always do at least one boat trip. A really relaxing way to spend the day, soak up the sun, swim in the crystal clear waters and enjoy a fabulous lunch. A pre dinner G&T on our roof terrace looking at the stunning views. Chatting to all the people we have got to know over the years and enjoying the warmth of their welcome.

Hi Rachey,
when we did the Kekova trip we booked through Abi Travel. It was a great day out, really well organised and relaxing. I think the boat stops at a place called Simena where there is a cafe / restaurant and that is where they serve the home made ice cream. Take a look at www.abitravel.net they are a kalkan based company run by an English lady Linda and a Turkish guy Osman. There are also lots of other tour operators in Kalkan who offer the same sort of trips.

Hi - I know Kekova well as we regularly do a boat trip from there...however I am struggling to think where this ice-cream shop is...  In relation to the narrow road that leads down to the boats - where is it - or is it along the front of the ''harbour'' so to speak.. where the little restaurants are...????

Felicity,

The ice-cream restaurant is below the castle at Simena, and I think the only way you''d arrive there is by boat.

I''ll post a photo in the gallery :)

Cafe Ankh at Simena is the place for the home made ice cream - I have to have the mixed as I can''t make my mind up between the peach and the banana! Abi''s trip usually stops at the jetty in front of it so if go on their trip you can''t miss it. I''m sure you will be pointed in the right direction though if you go on your own or with another company.   ;)
