Decent wines
« on: August 05, 2012, 04:48:28 PM »
We usually stick to white zinfandel or chardonnay not lovers of red wine, any advice on decent ones to buy, and price in supermarkets and restaurants.
Thanks

Turkish wines have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. They used to be pretty rubbish frankly, but now the range and quality has expanded hugely. As with wine drinking at home it's all down to personal taste, but my personal favourites last year were the Villa Doluca (pron. villa doll-oo-ja) rose and whites. There are Doluca wines without the 'Villa' but the Villa Dolucas are better quality and a shade more expensive. Lal rose is ubiquitous and I used to like it but found it actually gave me terrible heartburn (it took me a while to realise that the Lal was responsible). Quite bland but cheap are the Majestic and Angora wines you will find pretty much everywhere.  None of these travel well though so I would not waste valuable suitcase space taking any back to Blighty!

Bottle of house white 25TL tonight in Parc Kalkan.
Aklan was brilliant by the way.

I'm so pleased :) :)

Thanks KC. Perhaps Jayne could clarify, for those hunting down the bargain Angora, where it was 12TL?

Sorry guys!  I told Bob it was smile but in actual fact it is lucky super market which is opposite the taxi rank. They have Angora wine for 12 tl! I got a litre of kavak white wine which is very drinkable for 13tl. Sadly I have just poured the last out of the bottle! It has lasted 2 days though!

How do you make a bottle last two days? I struggle to make one last over an hour especially when it is hot and the wine is ice cold.

'Lal' is a very nice Rose that we bought in Yalli supermarket....can't recall how much though...(it cost not the amount of bottles we bought!)

Another vote for Lal rose! Very, very nice but a bit more pricey than some others. We bought it at Yali supermarket for 19.99tl (around £7.00) but so worth it. In the restaurants it was 30-45tl. We had so much of it I'm surprised I can remember how nice it is!!

Lal is the rose that gives me heartburn - Villa Doluca doesn't and I do recommend it. Yali is quite pricey for wine though. I think I saved a couple of lira on wine buying at the small supermarket by the roundabout. The Villa Doluca was about 13TL there from memory.

We are big fans of Lal Rose and there's a new Rose in a very pretty bottle around 19.99 TL in the new supermarket opp the Market. Its a Sauvignon Blanc Rose and very nice. Sells in the restaurants for around 40 TL. Majestic 2011 Rose is better than the 2010 and cheaper than Lal. White Angora ice cold is acceptable as a sort of Pinot Grigio. I agree with Painter Man..it doesnt last long at our apartment when ice cold and hot outside.. one at lunch, one at dinner ++++

Must try the Majestic 2011 then. I agree about Angora; when served ice-cold is very easy drinking but had some at lightly chilled and tasted very ropey. We put our wine glasses in the freezer about an hour before wine-o-clock and it was so refreshing. Missing Kalkan already (got back 31/08)!
