Home Sweet Home
« on: August 25, 2012, 08:53:39 PM »
And I don't mean in the UK.

Greetings from hot and sunny Kalkan.  Today has been very hot but it still feels like home.  As soon as we arrived last night we felt like we belonged here.  The UK is just somewhere we spend time so we can earn money to come back.

Spent the morning walking around town saying hello to the various people we have come to know.  Lunch followed at Fenner/Lighthouse.  Their salads are fantastic,  just the job on a hot day.

Following advise from the guys on the Forum we went to Fotos Pizza this evening.  We were going to go there on our first visit tow and a half years ago and after or meal tonight we were fools not to.  Definitely the best pizzas in Kalkan and I have tried a few.

It is now 10.45pm  and we are sat at the Samira Deluxe with a nice cooling wind blowing.  The moon is shining on the sea with Mouse and Snake silhouetted against the horizon;  beautiful.

Soon be time for bed and I won't have to dream about  Kalkan because I am here.

Cheers Jo (and Gary)

Yesterday was not as hot because there was a slight breeze, but today has been a scorcher, due to the humidity apparently.  Not that we complaining,  it is why we are here after all.

It was lovely to meet Bob and Jayne last evening.  During the conversation we discovered we live about 15 miles apart at home (UK home not Kalkan home).

We ate at Atkin last night, very nice and plenty of it.  Couldn't finish it all; it was a man size portion and I am a girl!  We have just eaten at the Samira Deluxe as we watched the light fade over Kalkan.  The lights are on now and we have another lovely view to enjoy while finishing our bottle of wine.  Can't drink a whole bottle at home but don't have a problem here.

Tomorrow is.my Birthday, let's hope the postman finds me.  What a way to spend your special day, in a special place (and Gary says with a special man!).

I will let you know how the day unfolds.

Have a lovely birthday tomorrow Jo! :) :) What a lovely place indeed to celebrate it! Know what you mean about it feeling like home, we fly to Dalaman 2 weeks today for a week in Fethiye and landing at Dalaman feels like 'we've come home'!!!

We are currently sat at Fener enjoying a cup of their lovely coffee.  Last few days have tried elsewhere but the coffee here is the best.  The sun is shining hot in a beautiful clear blue sky.  The skies have been really deep blue that we don't get in England anymore.  There is a breeze rippling the dark blue sea and we have a fan trying to keep us cool and failing.  Still the view across the bay makes up for it.  We love that view; it is our favourite of all the lovely views in Kalkan.

We ate at Sade for my Birthday, the food was as good as it.was in May.  They are so popular they turned away 40 people that night.  If you want eat here you will need to book.  We are coming back for our last night.

They family arrived on Wednesday with their 3 year old twins to their apartment up the mountain (can't spell Kizaltas).  Spent the afternoon in the pool playing with the kids.  We had a barbecue in the evening but they had fallen asleep and they had been so looking forward to the BBQ party on the roof.

We are taking it easy today had a bit too much to drink last night watching the football at Yali Bar.  Sitting outside in the warm evening drinking Efes, life doesn't get any better.  We are so lucky to have found this place.

Time to enjoy the view a bit more.

Thanks for that, we are really looking forward to our first holiday in Kalkan, only 9 more sleeps to go yeehay!!! Sade is one of the restaurants we are planning to visit we will need to find it and book a table on our 2nd day. We are staying in Truffle apartsments and have just read two more brilliant reviews on trip advisor, I think between us me and Jim have booked what is going to be a cracking holiday, he picked Kalkan, and, I picked Truffle!!!

Sorry I did not keep the reports coming while I was away.  Every time I tried to log on the conflicting signals from other establishments confused my little tablet.  It is not an expensive one and gets easily confused.  A bit like its owner.

We are now back in sunny UK and I see from the webcams that we left on the right day.  It was a clear blue sky and lovely and warm yesterday as we left and there is cloud in Kalkan today.  That won't please Gary's niece's husband who arrived in the early hours of this morning.  He will know it has been hot and sunny because his wife has a lovely tan.

The rest of the holiday went very much as the beginning.  Sitting in Fener for coffee and lunch and a hot and weary walk back the the hotel pool for a swim before showering and walking back into town for our evening meals.  We discovered that there were two of the comfy seats at Fener that got in the shade between 11.00 and 11.30 just in time for us to arrive for coffee.  When we got them we did not let them go!  Ate our lunch from our laps like we do with our TV dinners.  Only the view was much more interesting.

We went to Kalkan Beach Park one day.  Not had much of a report on the Forum that I can remember.  It was a very pleasant few hours.  Sitting on the sunbed next to the little bar listening to easy listening Turkish radio.  The food and drink although a Lira or two more expensive than over the water was very nice.  I can recommend their fresh lemonade.  The cost of the boat over is taken off the food and drink bill so boat, sunbeds etc are free.

We ate at Sade and Baharat again and both meals were wonderful.  The boys at Sade are lovely.  We had a table of four next to us that enjoyed their meal but were not overly impressed with the whole experience.  I think it must have been them because everyone else goes back for more and they were still turning people away.

We ate at The Nar for the first time this year.  The food was fine, but when they get busy, which was most of the time we were out there, the service does suffer.  It was a restaurant that we have been meaning to visit ever since we started going to Kalkan as a couple.  We will not be returning when we know we can get the same food, at the same price from other places with better service.

The twins learnt to swim without their armbands within a week of arriving from the UK.  They are 3 years old and only just learnt to swim with armbands just before they came away.  Just goes to show they are like sponges at that age with learning.  The pool in their grandparents apartment is quite deep so they had to be able to swim.  It is just getting the confidence to go in on their own now.

The weather was a little cooler the second week, but not much.  Still had to walk up going from patch of shade to patch of shade during the day.  I was hoping that all that walking would have kept my weight in check, but it didn't.  Still put on half a stone.  I was not going to give up on all the lovely food in Kalkan.  Back to the diet on Monday.

The tears at having to leave started early on this trip; 24 hours early.  When sitting in our seats at Fener and knowing we would not be back for at least 8 months they started to flow.  I thought I had dried up but when it came to saying goodbye to the guys in there they started again.  When it came to actually leave yesterday afternoon, it was a 3 hankie job before I even left the hotel.  I think it would be much easier if the Turkish people in Kalkan were not so nice.  They are like friends now instead of restaurateurs and shop owners.  I know they do want our money but they are friendly about it.

I have managed to get two loads of washing done and nearly dry today, so can have a bit of a rest before going back to work to earn money for the next time.

Until then.
güle güle

Thank you for that wonderful report Jo, only 1 more sleep for us then we will be winging our way to Kalkan for the first time.  Having been to Turkey 6 times before, and, getting rather fed up with the way some resorts are becoming very much commercialised we are really looking forward to experiencing Kalkan.

Oh, Kalkan!! This time next week i will be at the airport heading for our gate, I cannot wait! I also find that as soon as i arrive at Dalaman, i feel at home, in fact i relax as soon as we are up in the air and on our way! This time we are arriving in the middle of the night, so i will miss the first view of Kalkan when you go round the bend on the D400 before decending into the town. Roll on next week!!!
