Arts & Crafts in Kalkan
« on: August 22, 2012, 07:08:12 PM »
I love to acquire at least one item to bring back home when I return from Turkey and want my impending trip to Kalkan to be no exception. What I'm interested in is an antique shop, somewhere that specialises in local crafts (pottery, ceramics, metalwork) or an art gallery with work by local artists. I would really like a 'one off' memento and not something mass produced. Are there any places to fit the bill in Kalkan or Kaş?

Do look in at Memik's shop.   It is on the left hand side of the main street if you are going towards the harbour.   Right by Gironda restaurant.   He does metalwork himself and also sells metal work from other places.   I understand some are mass produced but some are definitely hand made and he usually has some old pieces.  We have found some interesting pieces there.

Thanks for this. I will look out for Memik's shop. Any more suggestions? Art galleries particularly welcome as I have room on my walls for some lovely new paintings!

Have a look in Sarpeddon (?sp) Gallery, down at the harbour.

Worth having a look at the shop halfway up the hill on the old road to the D400, the lady is an artist and her brother a carpenter, last year there were some lovely paintings and also a small amount of handmade wooden furniture there, not cheap but very different.

Gallery sarpedon under the pirate hotel in the harbour has a fine selection of artworks by Turkish artists, well worth a look.

There's more artiness to Kalkan than I'd supposed! Thanks for all the suggestions - I shall certainly check them out  :)
