From my Turkish Grammar text-book (a very erudite volume, written by an Oxford professor): " the verb 'to be' consists of enclitic suffixes with fourfold vowel harmony.....". I have managed to work out what he means (although the "enclitic suffixes" did give me pause for thought).
And as for the "fourfold vowel harmony" - I find I have similar problems after eating too much aubergine and olive oil!
