U.K. Mobile in turkey

Hi all I wonder can anyone advise me please.  I'm coming over to Kalkan again in a couple of weeks and want to give my old iPhone to a Turkish friend. I've seen somewhere that any phone not purchased in turkey and to be used on a Turkish network has to be registered otherwise it will stop working after a couple of weeks. Is this still the case? And if it is how does someone get a phone registered?
