Monarch 827 to Luton

Anyone any idea why Monarch's ZB 827 yesterday (28 July) went home via Athens?

I can see that there was an aircraft change which made the flight to Dalaman 3 1/2 hours late, but why would it go to Athens and wait for 4 hours?  It changed course over Izmir on the way home.

I feel very sorry for the people on board - to say nothing of those who had arranged to pick people up at Luton.
