Buying and owning a car is fairly straightforward - very simple if done through a dealer. If you buy privately, make sure you use a reputable agent to take you through the transaction - there are several in the area. You will need to convert to Turkish driving licence which is not difficult. This is new legislation, most Brits currently drive on UK licence - they should have and always carry a notarised translation. As a foreigner your car will have a special ''MA'' or ''MB'' registration number. Do not be tempted to lend your car to a Turk - it is illegal and if they''re caught your car will be confiscated and sold (no proceeds to you unfortunately) and you will pay a heavy fine before you can buy another. Car tax depends on type of vehicle and engine size; it is payable 6-monthly in January and July. Rates are quite reasaonable unless you go for a 4x4 - these are expensive (about 3x that of an equivalent 2-wheel drive). MOT equivalent tests are now being conducted properly which will hopefully remove some of the wrecks from the roads and ensure vehicles have lights (the correct colour too - I''ve seen cars with red front and white rear lights - not to mention the motorbikes with only blue LEDs as headlights and nothing at the rear). Cars must be equipped with warning triangles, first aid kits and high visibility over-jackets, these being checked on the ''MOT'' test.

Thanks a lot for the advice R2, but we dealt with this all ourselves and bought a car a couple of weeks ago
